Funny! Quite inventive as well.

In Japan, women give men chocolate (on Valentine’s Day) to show their affection,”

Evidently the guy here never heard of "giri" chocolate. No affection there.

Is that Waters on the rightmost edge of the photo? He looks pretty cheerless. Maybe he should fix that first.

This is a group and message I can support. Please, more of this for other "holidays" or "traditions" as well. Question everything! Attack meaning! Let's bring back the situationalists! This kind of thing is needed now more than ever. Reality is putting everyone to sleep.

Humor galore in this article!

'....came to the conclusion that being unpopular with the opposite sex was a class issue,'

Don't worry, lad. If it had gone further you'd have married beneath you, all men do ;).

The politics aside, they do have an argument with the "chocolate capitalists" issue. Look at White Day! Would recommend that those who read Japanese pop over to the group's website for a good laugh. They even prepared a bullet-point list for participants in yesterday's demo.

Very dry & wry humour. Love it.

Esp when marxist(?) founder Furusawa said he bought a Benz off the proceeds. Classic!

On another note, something I never thought about at all as Valentines has always been such a light affair, was when my friends son said the other day he hates valentines day. He is late 20s ~ 30 I guess and has never had a girlfriend or even been on a real date. He's a nice guy but very shy and a bit nervy. For him it reinforces negativities and inequalities and that he is missing out on what millions take for granted. In his case he actually wants to find love, happiness, grow a family etc, unlike many who apparently aren't interested. I made a joke about it with him and we all chuckled a little, but I could feel his sadness.

Just gotta find a nice girl to introduce him to, but ....hmmmm!

I hate Valentine's Day too' Always have but... about to crack open a box of chocolates from the Peninsula right now. Looks delicious!

I don't think they'Remember to 'killjoys'. What's fun about Valentines day in Japan? Women feel obliged to give chocolates to people they may not even like all in the name of marketing. It also reinforces the harmful cultural tradition in Japan that men are more important than woman.

I have nothing against Valentine's Day per se, but I've always thought that habitually buying a prefabricated packaged consumer product on a socially prescribed "giving day" has got to be one of the least creative and most shallow ways of "expressing your love" for another individual. In this day and age, it's sad how truly commercialized, uninspired and homogenized giving has become.

As for White Day, well that's just plain old capitalist exploitation! Down with White Day!

What I find a little disturbing is that there seems to be no awareness in Japan of the slave labor (sometimes literally, sometimes just very low wages) that grows and picks the cocoa that goes into their valentines day chocolates.

There is a serious issue here, and it does resolve around international capitalism, human slavery and child abuse... so I find this group offensive because they're detracting from very real, very serious issues with this sort of flippant display. I like a good laugh as much as anyone else, but not without at least a quiet nod to the real issue.

Guess they're going to have to protest the media next, because this article sure doesn't paint these guys as anything but a joke of their own making, and they're not likely to find any blame in themselves and want to truly change.

Yeah, Valentine's Day is extremely commercial, especially here and with White Day, and the best thing to do about it is tell people the REAL story of St. Valentine's and let them know that they need not necessarily buy chocolate or anything for someone else, but just try to do something nice for the people you love -- regardless of gender.

All right, Valentine's Day is a commercial orgy. But it is a harmless commercial orgy. It does not put anyone in debt, unless one have too many lovers. It is nonviolent. It makes people happy. It boosts the birth rate, if only a smidgen. Better that people buy chocolate than cigarettes.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Bah! Humbug!

1 ( +2 / -1 )

All of this love, but where are the children? Less commercialism and more relationism which go beyond the superficial.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

well in the states you could just reverse the statement and say it is to get men to buy chocolate- but the thing is Girls love chocolate.

so to guy['s in Japan who do not get any chocolate - you must be doing something wrong when your co-workers are not even giving it to you- lighten up - be nicer people- and remember- Girls like chocolate more that us guys do- so be sure to offer them some.

and remember white day!!!

Heck.... don't kill it.... just make it more of the traditional Western style.... where a guy give his wife or girlfriend something.

Kakuhido chairman Mark Waters told AFP. "Society is addicted to capitalism. People are profiting from it and we are here today to demonstrate our resistance to the love capitalists."

I guess being a charisma man doesn't have as much mileage as it once did.

This article is a winner. Thanks.

Great initiative! The Japanese consumer has been led by the nose and wallet for far too long by devious corporate practices and pseudo-traditions, and beware! My female informants (most who loath Valentine's Day) tell me they know about Easter and eggs. To me that tooth decay-inducing event would be the motherlode to the confectionary industry here. Let's hope Kakuhido is up for 12 rounds with the chocolate bunnies!

Killjoys demand end to Valentine's Day

I demand an end to killjoys.

On visiting my neighborhood bar, I found 2 large groups of women drinking and exchanging chocolates, another group was made up of men who were simply getting drunk together! Not one couple to be seen! That's what Valentines Day has become in Japan, I don't think the demonstrators have much to worry about! LOL!

Not really belonging to the National news section but the Entertainment section. Heck, maybe a Quirky news section is in order for this one.

Too bad it is a commercial event without even a little of emotion behind. Love leads to sex and should be Japan's top priority by now. Indeed, few couples, many drunk. No change. I love Japan for taking foreign things and totally misunderstanding the "point" (christmas in particular). My kids prefer the orignal way when asked. My japanese too afraid to say so ;)

Solution for these lonely hearts:

Learn some social skills(that doesn't mean empty pick-up lines).

Get out of the manga/gamer holes and into the real world.

Make yourself presentable(bathed, reasonably dressed and groomed).

Repeat as needed.

Talk about first world problems... I was amused until I thought about how much effort their putting into such a silly endeavor.

"Being unpopular with the opposite sex is a class issue." What a load. Being popular with the opposite sex from a certain class might be a class issue. But I've never met or seen anyone who couldn't have romance with the opposite sex because of their class.

It is good that this group tackles a major problem in the world...uhm...oh.
