Kin see bodies of Japanese car collision victims in Bolivia

LA PAZ —

Relatives visited the bodies of five Japanese tourists Tuesday in Bolivia who are believed to have been killed in a two-car collision there May 1, Japanese officials said. The relatives saw the bodies at La Paz airport on arrival from Japan via the United States, they said. A doctor who treated the surviving driver in the accident that killed a total of 13 people said Monday the driver may have been driving under the influence of alcohol.

The surviving driver, who sustained severe injuries, earlier told local media that the person who was driving the other car carrying the Japanese may have been asleep while driving or may not have been looking ahead carefully enough. On Monday, the Japanese Foreign Ministry asked Bolivia’s investigative authorities through the Bolivian Foreign Ministry to conduct a strict investigation into the accident.
