TOKYO —
The family of a Kurdish man will be granted special residency status for one year, Justice Minister Kunio Hatoyama said at a news conference Tuesday. Hatoyama suggested the Justice Ministry has given the daughter of the family, who is a first grader at an elementary school, special consideration for humanitarian reasons.
The family consists of the 32-year-old Kurdish man of Turkish nationality, his 41-year-old Filipino wife and their 7-year-old daughter. The man applied for refugee status on the grounds that the Kurdish people are suffering persecution, but faced a deportation order in January 2004.

I agree with Masako123. You have to take what that Kurdish man is saying with a pinch of salt. There are many Kurds currently living in Turkey and do not face danger of persecution. Unfortunately, there are also some Kurds who are members of PKK, a terorist organization (recognized as such internationally including Japan) which kills innocent people in southeast Turkey. I am very skeptical about his intention of staying in Japan.
Why doesn't he go to Phillipines. His wife is a Filipina. Does he not have a better chance there?
And to sukebeoyagi, you point is irrelevant. If we are going to talk about sports, then he should not go to UK as well (remember Heysel stadium disaster?)

So they will give a draft-dodger "special permanent residence" and he won't have to be fingerprinted every time he enters the country?
