I have never experienced such a long earthquake. It really scared me eventhough it was not so strong here. It started off really softly and gradually increased its intensity. I was sure that a major earthquake must have happened somewhere but I was unsure how it would become here. For security reasons, I went outside with my emergency goods. I was relieved that it didn't become any stronger after a while but I am prepared for aftershocks now.

This is just a reminder. There was that 7.2 magnitude earthquake on March 9th, 2011.

You are kidding right? That area is military bases and ice, hardly populated enough for news stories to be formed.

I didn't feel it in Hokkaido at all, and my FB feed has nothing about a quake. It was just over 1200 km from Sapporo, and considering Sapporo didn't shake much from 3/11 that was MUCH closer, it isn't likely you felt anything.

My guess is that you were just feeling the subway below, a breeze, cars, AC, or it was all in your head.

Earthquakes happen every day somewhere in the world, and every few weeks a 6.5+ (Iran was lower than that). In fact, every year there is an 8+, and every decade 9+. You'll hear about more soon enough, likely in Chile, US, NZ, Indonesia, or here in Japan.
