"M5.9 earthquake hits off Fukushima" "Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO), which operates the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, said no irregularities had been detected at the plant after the quake."

"The spent fuel pool above No. 4 reactor may be structurally unsound," "Fuel assemblies or the rods inside them may be damaged or break open if dropped or shaken violently" [americablog]

Nice little wobble here WNW Chiba, thankfully they take precautions for earth quakes while decommissioning, I guess that's why it will be going on for the nest 30 years.

Lets start them up what could possibly go wrong? Ohhh.....sorry it was unfortunate we didn't foresee such a circumstance.

Was meant to be a 3 where I am, but I didn't notice it.

"I believe they removed the rods from the No. 4 pool already." You are right!!!! "Tepco removes all spent fuel rods from reactor 4 pool"

Felt the movement here in Saitama, thought the lemon chu hi had kicked in a little too early.

I felt that here in Tokyo.

Although they have moved the fuel rods, the rods stored in the pools in that area could be upset by another big natural disaster in that area...lets hope not.

Don't worry about it, folks. If a quake ever does cause damage to the rods, or causes one of those shoddily-built storage tanks (remember those? Funny there hasn't been any kind of investigative reportage about them of late) to split and send tonnes of becquerel-rich water into the aquifers, we won't ever know about it, or at least not until our teeth start falling out.

Bad news like that would be covered by the secrecy bill, to prevent "confusion".

Harald,

Aquifers generally run from the land to the sea, so it is hard to see how any released water from Dai-ichi will contaminate aquifers.

I felt that here in Yokohama.

Oh for Gods sake! I don't think that was the point there Star!

NathalieB,

That was exactly the point. There are no aquifers running from Daiichi inland, so there is no way the plant can contaminate our drinking water.
