Did Tokyo shake? I was walking home about 5 p.m. and didn't feel a thing.

That's a strong one covering most of central and northern Japan. Kids screaming...
I hate earthquakes...

This was not Tokyo. Well I am living in Ibaraki, and actually this quake was not so serious.

Ibaraki is "northeast"?? That's a bit of a geographical stretch. Aomori, Iwate or Miyagi are northeast.

felt it in tokyo!!

Actually quake was centered in Ibaraki, or rather in the ocean outside mito. Shake maps showing levels 3s and 4s in Ibaraki, but it felt stronger to me.
It was a bit of a wierd quake, cause here it felt like the building was moving slowly in large 'circles'

BuzzB, check a map and a compass!

Did someone forget to mention the time of the earthquake? I see everything else covered but the time was omitted.

5pm today, and here in Tokyo it was bordering on alarming. Went on for quite a while.

Just a baby one in tokyo, these little ones hardly raise an eyebrow in our house now, unless the house starts making loud banging noises like the march ones did we just carry on as normal.

All the Japanese in my bldg were pretty worried about this latest one, hardly a baby one, went on for a minute at least. I for one will remain vigilant and am not not taking anything for granted and I been here 26 years.

Got a notice from Yurekuru and then another one. And waited. Then it started. Gentle but long and rolling. I could here some of squeaking from the interior (non-loadbearing) walls, but some colleagues who were chatting in the hallway hadn't even noticed it. I was in that most sensitive of positions to feel all quakes. (ie: in the smallest cubicle at the office,... never really a good place to be.)
oh, and asagao, don't let the door hit you! Ciao!

I live in Tsukuba and I was watching my kids closely and thinking..."uh oh, not agaaain~"
Fortunately, it wasn't so bad. Just a bit scary.

It was a 3 on the Japanese scale in Chiba and Ibaraki. What this article is not mentioning is that the temperatures of the reactors at the Fukushima dai ichi nuclear power plant are going up again and that TEPCO seems to have trouble cooling reactor number two, which is now exceeding 114.4 degree C.

Uwe: they probably did not mention the Fukushima as it did not have any relation to this quake and moreover the temperatures are not going up but are staying at 114 C as before.
Strange thing is that I did not notice the quake at all in Tokyo. Normally I am the only one who notices even the small quakes and gets scared...

So it is a 6.2? It felt like a 5.0 to me. I was on campus at the time and it didn't feel like much to me.

mekki, from what I know and read On the 21 of August, Tepco reported that all of the temperature sensors of Unit 1 through 3 were recording temperatures less than 100 degrees Celsius on Friday 19 August. Once other goals are met, Unit 1 through 3 will have achieved Cold Shutdown state. On Wednesday the 14 of September, TEPCO reported that at 11 AM the temperatures of Unit 2 where at 114.4 degrees Celsius. I do not think to have misread it.

I live in west Tokyo and heard some creaking but didn't even feel it although I was home at the time. Some of the people I know felt it and some didn't. After March 11 and the first few weeks of aftershocks I can't think of a Shindo 3 as a "bad one"- during the March 11 earthquake I could hardly stay standing, there's just no comparison.

My iPhone alarm went off and my students felt it before me. It shook our building a wee bit! I am in Tokyo, Ogikubo way!

You wouldn´t notice it while walking, but I was sitting in my car at a traffic light, and yes, it was immediately noticable. Like someone rocking the car. Then the radio started talking about it.

Every time we get shindo3~4 earthquake, many people worry "Is it gonna be bigger???", just like 3.11 quake that started as normal/usual quake, but then it got bigger and bigger and bigger...(>0<)
1
zichi
Yes, the problem with any earthquake is not knowing how strong it's going to be!

I'll feel better when the government starts making an effort to build a tsunami barrier to help prevent major damage when the next big quake hits. It just seems like the government is in a continual circle jerk with themselves and not doing a thing to help the people that are paying their salaries. A 6.2 may not seem like much too many people but if it moves an under water shelf enough, it can cause major damage.

mekki
Uwe: I think you have misread as in August 21st Tepco said all thermometers in Reactor 1 showed readings under 100 C but that Reactor 2 and 3 are still over it. In August 22nd they said the Reactor 2 is at 114.0 Celsius so unchanged.

I felt it here in western Tokyo, it was long and it was getting stronger and stronger so I was thinking....hmmmm if it does get way stronger time to get the heck out of my house with my son!

It was weird for us. Mother in law and the kids felt it on the 17th floor in our apartment, but down on the round where I was just coming home I didnt feel a thing. To be fair, these days I permanently feel like I am swaying anyway so no different to normal maybe?!
MIL from Osaka panicked and said to the kids to get under the table, but the kids barely looked up from cartoon network and said "Its just a 3 baba!"

Was outside as well and felt nothing. My wife said it was pretty strong. Said the same thing about slow circles.

Certainly was the strongest one for a while in my part of Ibaraki...went on for a bit too...I was at Starbucks and it was strong enough for the staff to run to open the door and people get off their seats...it was a pretty shallow centred quake , only 10km deep so the rocking felt quite substantial here...
