After watching NHK live coverage for nearly an hour, i have my own doubts about the data especially M6.6

I seriously doubt all those seismographs around the country are wrong, it's just that there are so many factors affecting how much damage an earthquake will cause that Magnitude alone isn't a good indicator. Some bigger earthquakes cause less damage, and some smaller ones cause more.

It was a 7.0 according to the U.S. Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center.

It was a 7.0 according to the U.S. Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008urah.php

According the the USGS' website, that 7.0 was followed up with a magnitude 5.3 aftershock about eight minutes later.

The Epicentre was out in the Pacific ocean so the level of the earthquake felt onland was about a 4 on the Japanese scale.

"Several tsunamis up to 20 centimeters high were observed"

can water barely over half a foot even qualify as a tsunami?

The epicenter of the quake was about 120 kilometers under the seabed off Fukushima Prefecture

My doubts are clarified now, the reason NHK never mentioned about it and instead were reporting epicenter of the quake was 10KM below...somewhere not seabed. As such, they were unable to find any impact of the quake while contacting various agencies by phone. Still they were able to continue the broadcast for one hour....how great of NHK

The maps I saw on the NHK broadcast clearly showed an X well off the coast. I think given the possibility of tsunamis, an hour long report was justified- when a 6.6 earthquake has occurred they can't exactly ignore it, even if there are no immediate reports of damage.
