Welcome to bizarro-world. Enjoy your stay. Please don't lick the lead-based paint on the wall.

If this country had books I think politicians will start burning them...

I have sent a protest mail to Mainichi and will not buy or even read their rag anymore.

Man, the suspended writer is sitting on a virtual goldmind. Set up his own website, translate ANYTHING he wants that is written in Japanese ANYWHERE in Japan, set up a discussion forum like here, and the traffic alone will make him rich.

If he could just think of this as an opportunity, think outside the box a little bit, he could easily write his own ticket, AND give the world a funny look at how Japan sees ITSELF, since he will only be translating articles, not writing them.

WHATTA YA SAY FIRED WAI WAI GUY?

I would like to know WHO is behind this sudden rush of angry calls??

Wai Wai has been around for years and has ALWAYS dealt with the seedier side of Japan. Sex and all.

Why is it suddenly a big issue???????

    Very Odd!!!!

  • knucklerap at 04:52 PM JST - 28th June

Waiwai was the end of my innocence.

  • nisegaijin at 05:46 PM JST - 28th June

There is no sex in Japan. Everyone, boycott Mainichi!

    Freedom of speech yo!

  • Sagecat at 06:33 PM JST - 28th June

Heh, Nicegaijin. At least half of the articles on WaiWai were on the topic of how Japanese people in fact, do not have sex all that much.

  • vonion at 09:35 PM JST - 28th June

Mainichi without Waiwai is like JT without readers' comments

"We apologize for betraying the trust of our readers"

Thank you for apologizing, but perhaps could you also explain exactly what you are apologizing for. Is it,

a)for having WaiWai on your site in the first place. As a sometimes WaiWai reader, I myself never criticized the site, and am not aware of any other readers who did. Perhaps you could let us know how many of the 1000 calls and e-mails came from people with non-Japanese names. In other words, from your readers.

b)for caving in to pressure from people who have accused your readers of being perverts who read the column for sexual gratification, and of being so stupid that they took the column seriously.

c)for acting in a manner that might be "misunderstood" and create a negative impression of Japan. Not saying that the actions of one Japanese company, or even one Japanese internet message board, should be thought to reflect upon Japan as a country, or that the idea it might is even rational. Just that if somebody wants to think that way, they could find lots of stuff in this whole business to help them.

d)for offending delicate Western sensibilities. I know we are a mysterious bunch, but it comes down to this. Accountability and taking responsibility is good, passing the buck and covering one's ass is bad. Perhaps the Mainichi management needs some time off to reflect on their lack of cultural awareness. Too bad old Rupert is not calling the shots, they would get a lifetime off.

Your plan seems to ignore the fact that most material is copyrighted.

Every time I go the Mainichi Daily News site the WaiWai section just keeps getting bigger and bigger with the apology.

  • knucklerap at 05:16 AM JST - 29th June

This quote is from the Mainichi Daily News:

We reflected on the fact that we had disseminated information that lacked moral character, and cancelled the column completely.

Note how they don't lack moral character. The* information* which they disseminated lacked moral character.

I was just reading the news on Mainichi's site:

    英文毎日編集部に籍を置く日本在住の外国人記者と外部のライターが執筆し、日本国内で発行されている雑誌の記事の一部を引用しながら、社会や風俗の一端を英語で紹介した。どのような記事を選択するかは主に外国人記者が行った。

So, they are pinning this on the foreigner.

The question I have, was it not the writer's job to translate these articles? He may have chosen which articles to translate, but is it not the job of the EDITOR to READ articles BEFORE publishing them?!

You keep asking completely reasonable questions like that and soon Japan will become unliveable for you.
