A maintenance worker died after becoming caught up in an escalator mechanism during a routine check, police said Wednesday.
According to police, it is thought that the man, a 23-year-old repairman, became entangled in the mechanism inside an escalator while working on a construction site in Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, TV Asahi reported.
The man was taken to hospital where doctors worked for three hours to save his life, but were unsuccessful.
Police said they have not yet determined the cause of the accident.

Have you ever watched those people maintaining escalators and moving walks? It looks like they are working inside a death trap. Just imagining the nightmare the second it would start to spontaneously move. I'd be nervous even if they made sure the power was cut after checking twice...even three times. RIP, sorry man!

There should be one piece that can be easily removed and stuck in a pocket that will disable the entire mechanism. That's the only way to be completely safe.

If it is routine maintenance, shouldn't the power be off?

The story doesn't say how he was caught in the mechanism so its not a sure thing that the power on or off would make the difference. Even un powered heavy machines are dangerous.
