A 36-year-old man and his 14-year-old daughter died in a fire that destroyed the second floor of their home in Koshigaya, Saitama Prefecture, on Saturday morning.

Police identified the two victims as Yoshiyuki Kataoka and his daughter Arisa. TBS reported that Kataoka's wife, who was sleeping downstairs when the fire broke out, called 119 at around 12:30 a.m., saying the second floor was on fire.

The fire was extinguished after about an hour, leaving the second floor destroyed. Police retrieved the two bodies from the second floor. Kataoka's wife suffered smoke inhalation but her condition is not life-threatening, police said.

Maybe it was a malfunctioning space heater, it is getting cold these days.

That's heartbreaking both the father and daughter died.

They must have collapsed from smoke inhalation or were trapped in a back room with no windows.

It's hard to imagine not being able to jump off the second story of a house.

If a fire starts while somebody is sleeping, the smoke could kill them before they wake up and realize there's a fire.

Let's hope it is just a tragic accident and not something more sinister.

This is the reason why you need a inexpensive smoke detector in every house. For safety, Japan goverment and local goverment should make it a law to have smoke detectors on all residental homes. If you live in back room with no windows, they should be fined for code violation and make them add windows.
