Was the bottle a piece of the regular flotsam that surrounds this polluted archipeligo? If so, this story should serve as a parable for environmental conservation.

It would seem to be more a parable for environmental waste. The "flotsam," if that's what it was, saved his life.
He should thank Al Gore for inventing "trash", every 2L bottle I get is going into the sea now -it could save a hapless ones life and they last damn near forever (one bottle could save many hapless))
Who cares HOW the guy fell over -- it was obviously stupid, whatever the reason -- but he stayed alive, and that's all that matters. Lucky boy, I'd say. Very lucky. I'd be keeping that 2L bottle for the rest of my days. Throw coins into it or something.
Let's see...good weather, man overboard, ship doesn't notice, something doesn't fit in this story. Even in stormy seas, a person going overboard is a rare case.
assuming plastic bottles don't degrade very fast and fish don't end up eating them then they shouldn't be the main cause for pollution of the sea. Much more the oil spills and liquid agents that are poured into the ocean that cause actual problems...

Sometimes we get lucky.

Glad he's okay. Whatever company made the product that was in the bottle should use this in the next advertisement.

I think that the bottle was an empty, plastic shouchu bottle. It explains the fall from the back of the boat and the proximity of it to the man.

Easy, its a ship and going to sea is dangerous.
Unless the "What ever the reason" as actually a reasonable reason.

The person who threw that plastic bottle into the ocean should get a medal.

I guess the moral of the story is if you see someone floating in the ocean, you should toss them a plastic bottle. ;)

My son practiced floating in the pool with a 2-liter plastic pet bottle in elementary school.
