A 71-year-old man was injured by a wild boar while walking near his home in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, police said Monday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4 p.m. Sunday. TBS reported that the man suffered injuries to his head, arms and legs.

The boar fled into the garden of a nearby house. About 20 hunters and police captured and destroyed it two hours later.

Police said the boar was 1.2 meters long and weighed about 100 kilograms.

I am quite sure they got rid of the animal in a humane manner, but the term "destroyed" makes it sound like explosives were involved in the back of my mind.

Let's just hope you're right...

This would be less of a problem if the Japanese government would allow bow-hunting. For the life of me, I can't imagine why a nation that has a rich history of archery refuses to allow the use of this weapon to take boar and deer, both of which have become epidemics in the rural areas.

I so agree with you! My first wife's family is from that area. Many years ago when I was stationed at MCAS I would spear wild boars for the neighbors. Farmers were asking me all the time. I got so busy on the weekends that my wife's family was scheduling my time and collecting money for services. For some reason, Japanese seem to be squirrely when it comes to killing animals Yeah, I know, it is not just a Japanese phenomena, but a modern human 'condition.' However, it seems more pronounced in Japanese Culture with their Buddhist traditions Yeah, I know... don't get Buddha involved. Oops. Sorry for the tangent.

We were making so much money that my brother-in-law got some hounds from somewhere. It came to a point I was making twice as much money killing boar than I was in the Marine Corps, even with the Yen rate at 360 yen to the $ (Yes, it was a long time ago).. Alas, I transferred back to the States and have never been back. BUT, I ALWAYS wondered, how many I could of slaughtered if I'd have had a compound bow. I hear the monkeys are getting bad in Yamaguchi too... and that they bring 60,000 a head. Can anyone verify that? I might resurrect my skills.

Yep,,,, if I would of had a bow.... Oh, is it really illegal to hunt with a bow in Japan? It was probably illegal to kill 'em with the spear too, huh? Or even to have a spear that I had made in the Airframes workshop on base.... huh?

From what I've read Japan has changed so much.... (sigh)

It's probably illegal for the same reason as where I live. The animal doesn't normally die instantly/very close to instantly when using a bow, even if its a vital shot. Huntings a lot more "humane" when using a weapon like a rifle or sniper. A headshot, killing it instantly, painless. Even with that though, we have jerks who shoot the animal in the legs just to enjoy it trying to escape, injured.

I hope the man recovers quickly.

And I agree that hunting needs to become more common again.

Maybe it's time to legalize the use of bow and arrow for hunting so we can cull down all those wild boar and deer (JR West has a lot of problems with rural trains running into deer and boar at certain times of the year, and JR East has similar problems in the Tohoku region).

In my hikiing and cycling in Kyushu I see many wild boar. I did not realise they were so dangerous. Mt Sarakura. kYUSHU. A large male and female with 3 or 4 boarlets. They all seem so tame to me. The female climbed to the top steps of Mt Sarakura and I took photos. Next halfway down the female boar held its ground on the road as me and another cyclist crossed before jumping over the edge into a creek. They dont seem so dangerous.

I've lived in Yamaguchi for over 15 years and never seen more than one wild boar in all that time! To say its an epidemic is tosh. Yes, they exist here, but not in great numbers.

@belrick Wild boar breed like crazy you can have just two and in a years time you can have 12

Well, I'll see if this post can be resurrected. It's a bit more than 4 years when I posted last. Belrick, is it still the same in Yamaguchi with the lack of wild boar? They've multiplied here, and in Motegi, where my wift's uncle lives, his neighbor spears them all the time and sells me the meat for cheap. And we love it! I'd rather have him kill them with a spear after he traps them than to see a bunch of guys who can barely shoot a shotgun try to exerminate them with buckshot, and if you've ever seen a broadhead come out of a crossbow, a heart shot will take them down as quickly as a rifle (but you have to have owned a shotgun for 10 years before you can have a rifle). I wish Japan would re-think it's hunting laws.

Those wild boars be more dangerous than Tasmanian Devils.
