A 61-year-old man died after he was hit by a train while trying to crawl under it in Yokohama, police said Monday.

Police said the incident occurred on the JR Tokaido line in Tsurumi Ward at around 11:20 a.m. Sunday. TV Asahi reported that the train had to perform an emergency stop at a railway crossing after receiving a signal of an obstacle on the tracks.

According to eyewitnesses, while the train was stopped, the man attempted to crawl under a carriage in order to get to the other side of the crossing. But the train suddenly began moving forward again, and killed the man underneath.

JR said train services were affected for about 90 minutes, affecting 35,000 passengers.

What ? Is there a mental hospital near by? Sounds like the guy was a bit stupid or had some mental disorder surely no one in their right mind would crawl under a stopped train simply to get to the other side, but in this case I guess he really did get to the other side literally.

No, some people are really optimistic wrt heavy machinery. Train stopped and he thought it would stay that way a while.

I have great sympathy for accident victims, but really, that guy was asking for it. I am just surprised he made it through 61 years of life with that attitude.

Crawling under a train to cross the tracks?!

Darwin award winner. Couldn't wait 5 or whatever minutes for the train to clear and it cost him his life and I bet painfully too.

Shaking my head in disbelief.

Probably watched (past tense) too much TV action dramas. Well, he won't do that again.

I do feel sorry for this guy. But, i often read things like this and wonder how many deaths in the world (including early deaths due to tobacco and drugs) are just due to..... lack of wisdom (trying to put it nicely).

Same as the airmen who died taking photos of waves in a typhoon.

The weird thing about Japan though is that so many old people do stupid things. In my country old people usually tell off young people for doing dangerous things on the roads. At 61, you'd expect he'd have thought a bit more.

While I'm on my rant.... I'm amazed at how many older people just run across train track crossings by lifting up the boom gates or whatever they're called.

Maybe they're needs to be a yearly class in schools called "Ridiculous Ways People Have Died"?

That's a horrible accident to witness. I bet it was a huge crowd waiting at the crossing gate, and my heart goes out to them.

JR said train services were affected for about 90 minutes...

The guy was cut in two and it affected JR for about 90 minutes.

And this is how all those stupid signs and warning labels come into existence. I mean, come on, wouldn't common sense click in on this?

I dunno what to say, stupid idea to crawl under a train, somehow this kind of human seem to never get less, and yet they still erase themselfs.

I'd like to assume that the man had something like dementia as nobody in their right mind would do something like that, but then again common sense isn't a strong point here for most.

More than dementia, he probably had some appointment or somewhere he needed to be, and thought he couldn't afford to be late for.

Of course now he's late.

No has said it yet but it goes without saying EVERY TIME even though we most likely double face palm to news like this: "You can't fix stupid".

Well, actually you can fix stupid, but then you can't learn from it and move on as this former 61 year old learned the hard way.
