Got a friend whose father used to coordinate Search & Rescue operations in Australian waters. This guy hates such "adventurers" because looking for them wastes important resources.
well I admire his courage to try it instead of sitting at home and posting how stupid he is. The power he would have to motivate children and adults if he succeeded is well worth the effort.
Of course some people think that retired Japanese men should just be alcoholic, pachinko addicts as per their "this is how I see the world, and everything must fit it" mind sets.
Go ahead and conquer Everest and the mighty seven seas I say. My hats off to this man. He is not some Oji-san who climbed the roof during a typhoon. His spirit is undeniable and is what drove our ancestors to glorious feats which we idolize today. Imagine if Hillary, Columbus etc had stayed home because of a few nasty detractors? Or if Obama did not run because of his race and the obstinacies against him.
He worked like salve most of his life and did the right thing by his family by not attempting such a burning desire when he had Dependants? But his is true to himself and the fire has never gone out. I admire the fact that he has had a smashed arm for about a week, in mountainous seas and is still alive.
I can assure you that most posters here would have given up much much much sooner than this tough customer.

Maybe the oar was the two paddle-one-shaft type that kayaks and outriggers use?
