Man saves woman who falls onto tracks at subway station

An office worker saved a woman from being struck by a train after she fell off the platform at Senkawa subway station in Tokyo's Toshima Ward on Saturday night, the Tokyo fire department said Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 11:40 pm. The 45 year-old woman apparently fell onto the tracks and the 42 year-old man jumped onto the tracks, and pulled her into the space underneath the platform to avoid the oncoming train.

“There wasn't even a full minute until the train came in,” said a witness. “It was a very close call.”

The woman suffered minor injuries to her face but otherwise is in good condition, fire department officials said. The fire department said it intends to send the woman's rescuer a letter of gratitude commending his courage.

I see people always walking too close to the edge. If you are walking close to the edge a trip, or a bump might be enough to knock you over. People are stupid and think it won't happen to them. There will always be these problems. Not just from drunk people. Good chance she was drunk too though.

Any bets she was well and truely liquored ?????

I'm always worried about getting accidentally knocked off when I want to pass through the platform, but there is no space to go behind the queue and then some jerk comes the opposite direction and takes up 80% of the space in front of the queue.

I really wish there are more options, especially when the platform is so crowded. This case might not have been drunkenness or stupidity. It could have been wobbly heels and some guy who thought he needed a wide clearance as he passed in front of the queue.

kudos to the brave 42 year old man! Not many like him nowadays.

Wish there were more options? This is the archpelago of Japan with 60-80% of the total island uninhabitable mountain terrain...or so I believe I read when first studying about it.

There are options. I go through the middle of the line.

if a handsome 42 year old saves me, I would be in heaven...

cracaphat, I don't know what you're trying to imply or why you can't simply be happy that a life was saved.

Now that's great news.

Some of the comments here are just unnecessary and smart ass.

If both are single and get married. Movie of the week on TBS!

Sengawa is a Keio Line station (surface station) in Chofu.

It's not a subway station nor is it located in Toshima-ward.

SENKAWA (with a K) Station is a Tokyo Metro Subway Station in Toshima-Ward.

A really brave man. Congratulations.

I don't want to minimize this brave man's heroic effort. What he did was noble and should receive massive public props. However, with more than a few people standing on the platform, and a woman falling off, it would seem logical to expect somebody to help her out. A quick jump down, and pull her underneath an adjacent protective covering really doesn't require all that much strength and effort.

That being said, I'm glad there was at least one person who his their wits about them, and didn't stand around waiving for some "official" while the poor woman was crushed to death.

This is the only thing that can save Japan. Individual initiative.

Brave dude indeed. Well done.

I think the designs at stations are really good here; plenty of space to duck both on and around the tracks, should someone fall onto the tracks and need to escape.

"The 45 year-old woman apparently fell onto the tracks and the 42 year-old man jumped onto the tracks..."

I'm all for objective reporting, but it seems pretty clear she DID fall on the tracks, not 'apparently'. Anyway, I'm always happy to read stories like this instead of hearing about how people jumped/fell in front of a train and died. Congratulations to this hero, and I do hope the woman shows her gratitude. I have no doubt she was liquored, but you never know.

gaijinfo, imagine that 1) a subway train is coming in less than a minute, there's probably warning sounds and people are queueing up to board 2) this train big and heavy, it could easily grind you into several pieces of screaming meat 3) the drop to the tracks, though doable, could leave you with an injury that prevents you from dodging said train or kill you if you touch the electrified third rail

would you do the same as this heroic man in the news? i'd say it's pretty understandable that some would not risk their own life for her. at the very least, i'd hit the emergency stop button first!

If the train pulled in within a minute, was this a suicide attempt versus an accident???

A real hero. Kudos to this man.

Always nice to see headlines like these instead of the usual ones of babies or young children losing their lives to nutty/careless parents.
