"unmanned" means no people. But i suspect that it may have been interferred with by a Chinese sub. That is my guess.

the Chinese probably got a good laugh out of this one. lol.

Japan admitted Wednesday that its navy lost a $5 million unmanned submersible during a survey last year, with a nine-day search of the ocean floor yielding nothing.

There was an old lady that swallowed a fly...

Oh well.

What's a submersible or two?

The money comes out of taxes.

Plenty more where that came from.

If you press down and then switch character, and switch back again it might respawn again in Paleto Cove.

“The ministry has set up a panel to investigate how it was lost.”

disappeared after the cable that connected it to a surface ship was severed.

Who needs a panel when Ive already worked it out lol

Its sitting in Kim Jong Un's living room right now.

They probably found evidence of Kaiju and this is a coverup.

it defected to north korea

inakaRobJan. Its sitting in Kim Jong Un's living room right now.

yeah, but it's ticking

Classic MSDF! And some people claim these guys could take on China and NK without the US presence.

If MSDF can not maintain or control the unmanned craft of submersible which is three meters long and two meters wide, how on earth they can conquer and protect the Takeshima, Senkaku and Kuril Islands?

If Japan has already owned nuke ready enriched Plutoniums, for the sake of the world they should be handed back to IAEA. If Bin Laden disciples will steal from MSDF, it will be the end of the world.

The Tsuruga Straight has fast current speed so it will be very difficult to locate the unmanned submersible unless it's sending a special signal. A severed cable is a very rare case. Investigate the cause and prevent a recurrence.

“The ministry has set up a panel to investigate how it was lost.”

Oh, that's OK, then.

No need to worry.

The "panel," comprised of learned and extremely highly paid, do-less people from academia, friends and relatives of other highly placed government workers, funded by taxes from our hard earned labour, will, at enormous expense, and once they get through the paperwork, endless meetings and discussions, after 10 or 15 years, declare that the "submersible is lost."

If cable severed, then surface

Or maybe better lost on the sea bottom than found by someone else. I'd like to understand the logic behind not having a fail save fumction...

Or maybe the fail safe failed too...

I think they'll find it in Davy Jones's locker. Or maybe in Adm Tojo's bathtub.

Tumbledry

I'd like to understand the logic behind not having a fail save fumction...

Agree with you there. A floating $1000 commercial satellite locator on a reel of poly line might have saved the 5 mil. A trigger on a timer to release it would have done the trick, or a (non)movement sensor ... hindsight is telescopic in this case.

Hay its only money .Next time build a better one with a homing device in it .Really lost a unmanned sub that is redulicious in these times. Bet some one has made a quick busk by selling it to the Arabs to use as a ship of the desert.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Who needs a panel when Ive already worked it out lol

It just means they have to do something about it so they will make a panel that does absolutely nothing.

At least Japan admits to them, having served I know how much gets brushed under the carpet. Or do you think the US, British, etc Military services list everything lost.

If the rest was as open why do we need a Snowden, etc?

2 ( +4 / -2 )

cable probably cut by submarine transiting the strait. of course no navy would admit that their sub was in that area.

Quote|: "...the cable that connected it to a surface ship was severed."

Caught on a rock? How hard did they pull on it? Was it ripped apart, or cut clean through? With no information re the state of the cable end, we can make no intelligent guesses here.

One USD 5m submersible is nothing. Accident happen all the time in all militaries. USN has lost planes from carrier decks. I'm afraid those who think this near insignificant incident is some reason to ridicule the entire JMSDF are simply displaying their degree of ignorance.

What's a submersible or two?

To lose one submersible, Mr Wooster, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness.

Classic MSDF! And some people claim these guys could take on China and NK without the US presence.

"Classic MSDF", that infers that they do this sort of thing all the time; do they? Must have missed that.

"......without the US presence." Well, we seem to read about the US losing 'planes and helicopters far more than we read about the Japanese forces losing theirs.

Even those little round vacuums can find their way back to the dock. GPS?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Can they find their home over a long distance in an environment that also encompasses a few hundred metres of depth. Target area 1" x 2".

The unmanned submersible decided to defect to the dolphins! Or perhaps the dolphins kidnapped it! LOL

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Russia got it.
