As ever on Japantoday some bad-faith comments slating Japan.

Hey, Michelin is a business, and it's up to the consumers whether or not to believe their advertising. And advertising is basically a con anyway, isn't it? As for me, I'll stick to my favorite ramen shop and teishoku restaurant.

As ever on Japantoday some bad-faith comments slating Japan...

Samurai, just think of it as cheap entertainment. They reflect more on the authors' personal insecurities than any real or perceived faults of Japan.

Anyone know if Gordon Ramsay's Conrad in Tokyo has any stars?

It had no stars last year. I can't imagine it has any this year. I've been to the restaurant. It's uninspired and extremely slow. The reviews on Trip Adviser are almost all negative.

No offence to Michelin....I would rather eat at that Thai Yatai place in Harajuku...informal, oishii, and hospitable...try it out guys!

  • mrhog123 at 01:58 AM JST - 19th November

What, Wendy's in Ikeburkuro doesn't have a star? Maybe the Japanese can't evaluate a gaijin greasy spoon. BTW the Thai Yatai is great.

Who reads a guide on where to eat? Interact with people; co-workers, those you are doing business with or people you meet, if all else fails be adventurous and try random places, there are many wonderful places in Japan to eat that are outside of the tourist bubble.

yawn. why is this news? I love the food in Japan. Don't need Michelin to tell me so.

  • soldave at 08:56 AM JST - 19th November

I love that this is the 4th most important story in Japan today. Slow day so far?

And I hope Skylark Gusto has got a star. If you want cheap food at 3am, there are few places better!

I'm disappointed that Saizeriya lost a star over the melamine scandal.

The Thai house in Nishi Azabu (no idea of the name, it's a stand-alone two story house) is terrific and IMHO better than the Yatai place.

The reality is that in Tokyo the best places are the small, local establishments that offer real warmth, great food, and cold beer. It would take decades for any reviewer (or team of) to work its way through them all - the Micheline guide is great as a guide to those restaurants that want to be noticed and make a splash - but it'll never be a reference to real Tokyo cuisine.

Ultradodgy: hey, thanks a lot for info. I'll try it out one of these days! ..:)

Local Izakaya's do food better than some of these places, and much much cheaper.

  • nimbus at 04:47 AM JST - 20th November

According to TBS news channel some of the restaurants listed in the book are already closed down due bad economy. Therefore, Michelin should publish revised version to avoid inconvenience to visiting guests.

So how good are these reataurant if they don't get enough business to stay open?

  • sydenham at 05:43 AM JST - 20th November

Yeah, izakayas make some of best food in Japan. Even some of the chain ones are damned good. In general, for gourmands like myself, Tokyo and environs is an awesome place to live.

I'm kinda surprised at some of useless anti-Japan hating going on here. Sounds like sour grapes to me. If my home town had any Michelin three-star restaurants I guarantee you it would be the talk of the town for months, and people would be bursting with pride about the local food.

What am I saying? Montreal has no 3 star places, and people are always bragging about the food anyway.

    Tokyo food rocks!

  • HaroldSteptoe at 05:46 AM JST - 20th November

I don't understand all the fuss over these overpriced restaurants for snobs.

Michelin give 3 star ratings to 9 Tokyo restaurants, yawn, and most of 'em are French restaurants. Yeah really makes sense dunnit?

For me pie, mash liquer, beats Michelin restauants hands down, oh yes!
