Yeah, a "my bad" wouldn't be quite adequate if they launched an accidental retaliatory strike.

  • NuckinFutz at 08:22 AM JST - 14th August

Japan launch a retalitory strike? That's pretty funny! First they'd have to appoint a minister in charge of rataliations, form committees to study the matter, bribe thousands of people in the defense industry to make sure the missile works, and then MAYBE something would happen (total elapsed time ... a year or so.)

I wonder how many of those local politicians had to change their pants after the alarms went off?

This is quite funny. Imagine being in your usual unproductive Wednesday morning quality control meeting, and you are informed over the intercom that missiles are incoming. Would you abruptly end the meeting or would you continue to follow it to the letter and then clap 10 times at the end? If you're gonna be on the wrong end of a missile attack, it's best to die in group harmony rather than live with the guilt of exercising some common sense. Wow this post was a bit out there. Better have some coffee.

I wonder if the story, 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf' has ever been translated into Japanese.

as a result of human error

Now, that is funny! You can just imagine the situation - "Oh, here's a big red button. What does it do? I think I'll push it and find out!" What a knob head!

"Maybe it had something to do with Americans-or whoever wants a war- on the inside who would like to instigate something like this?".

Now that statement is one of the funniest things I've heard all year, right up there with UFOs, Elvis in the Arctic, little green men and the Loch Ness Monster - conspiracy theory at its best!!

  • UnagiDon at 10:24 AM JST - 14th August

No conspiracy, man! Think about what is in Aichi that's actually worth targeting with ballistic missiles? Only one thing - Toyota HQ! Obviously GM had something to do with this. Or the Illuminati.

Yeah... this system is going to be effective! Idiots!

If ever there were a first attack, and the warning system worked – nothing would be done prior to the attack. No general alarm, no bringing in from playgrounds of the children at school, no safely shutting down of nuclear reactors, etc.

How do I know this? Because it didn’t happen this time. In other words, the warning system was useless – save for a few bureaucrats who might have gone to the basement to save themselves.

Now on the other hand, if one attack occurred, and a second warning came in – only then would it be believed and action taken, but of course it would be too late since destruction would have followed the first attack.

Hence – this warning system is useless.

I hope they have a "this time is the real deal" button.

  • Farmboy at 11:53 AM JST - 14th August

It's nice that they haven't wired in the retaliatory barrage of missiles from the US ships stationed near Japan. Should be really fun if that happens...

    Fire Drill

  • electric2004 at 12:44 PM JST - 14th August

On the other hand, combine this with the news that there are people out there selling fake alarm receivers ...

"In 2 minutes you're going to be toast"

I mean really, how many Japanese apartments have a bomb shelter anyway, what's the point of a warning? Either way you're going to get a North Korean missile down your chimney a warning will just make your last 2 minutes on earth awful.

What about instead of spending billions on a warning system we have a Tactical High Energy Laser (THEL) system put in place to actually protect us? With a ground based laser no one can accuse us of being offensive.

  • nandakandamanda at 02:15 PM JST - 14th August

i wonder if the NKs got their agents to keep pushing the warning button? Then when they do fire their missiles at Japan, it'll be the boy who cried "Wolf!" as serendipity says above.

Burglars use this technique in Britain, setting off the burglar alarm until no-one pays any more notice, or even until the alarm itself gets switched off as 'faulty'...
