the B52s were not "nuclear-armed " they are nuclear capable same as many of the planes already flying around in the pacific. Big difference in the two. They were not flying missions with nuclear weapons on board.

The DPRK will run out of things to threaten in no time at this rate. Love the hypocritical whine by the DRPK General about the US 'setting us as targets' when the DRPK has been threatening 'seas of fire' on anyone it doesn't like for weeks.

  • 6

    Jason Ring

Sigh... The dude already threatened to leave Washington in a ring of fire (sorry Johnny Cash) or something like that.. Was this an add on that he forgot to mention previously? Or is this somehow more threatening or worse? Not sure what Okinawa has to do with this or did he forget to mention them as well in the first threat?

    @some14some has it right..

The B-52 bombers can carry nuclear weapons but they were not carrying them during the drills. They probably were carrying dumb bombs or duds. North Korea is just squirting in its pants with fear at the site of those awesome machines. Does North Korea even have a aircraft that can carry a bomb that can go over 100kmh? haha.

Yeah all these threats from North Korea have been really firing me up. North Korea can kill people but they must realize they will loose badly. They have been making threats that are severely illegal. Threats to "KILL and BURN" people. Has the U.S said they will burn down the North Korean capital? No. They have simply been adults and ignored the insults from the angry little child (North Korea), and have done some training over South Korea to be careful just in case of a war. What does North Korea want us to do? Turn our backs and put down our guns and hold targets on our heads???

The U.S has every right to actually flatten North Korea. North Korea has outright declared they want to nuke U.S.A, this is utterly sick and insane. Think about it readers....your families, your friends, burned to crisp? This nation North Korea hates you, and wants you dead..

I hope that North Korea is shut down. I pray that it is done this year or next year, whether it be through war, assassination, talks, agreements, I don't know what...but they are dangerous... Like a drunk with a loaded gun.

    That is all.

Okay NK. You are the big bad boy of Asia. We accept it. You have the guns, the troops, and rhetoric. What would it take for you to be the big good boy of Asia? Your neighbors play the game so that you think you are rough and tough. Yes, you can take a shot, but then the party is over. Apparently, you have forgotten about subs and stealth planes.

White Beach is a port facility along with a number of other smaller training areas and bases

        Camp Shields Barracks Okinawa, Okinawa
White Beach Area Port Facility Uruma, Okinawa
Kobi Sho Range Training Ishigaki, Okinawa
Sekibi Sho Range Training Ishigaki, Okinawa
Oki Daito Jima Range Training Kitadaito, Okinawa

Viking... yes there are two Navy bases in Okinawa.. Camp Lester and White Beach Naval port.

Camp Lester is not on the list because it is scheduled for return, 100%, when the new hospital is finished on Foster, sometime later this year, over half of Camp Lester has been returned already to Japanese control.

It's insulting to the JSDF to call them "nothing". They have a LARGE presence in Okinawa and more and more are going to the outer islands as well, including a discussion of building a new Japan Ground Self-Defense facility in Miyako too.

I think the North Koreans are just blowing hot air. They don't have the resources for any type of sustained conflict. How many nukes and missiles to carry them do they realistically have? It couldn't be many. And I doubt they could produce enough needed for any type of conflict. They're making noise and trying to get attention. That's all that will ever happen with them. A serious pain for South Korea, but that is it. Let the SKoreans get on with mending bridges with them and the problem will eventually go away.

NK has no Air craft carrier or Sub Marine. Even they buy them urgently, they have no skilled people to handle them. Physically they will not send navy or planes to Guam or Okinawa because it cost them precious fuel and time. Their weapons are missiles and computer Viruses. only

  • 6

If NK even LOOK like they are readying missiles for a strike the CIA satellites would spot them, and US bombers would be directed towards them and just carpet-bomb the area. You can't even fart without the US knowing about it thanks to their spy satellites and intelligence gathering personnel on the ground.

The Pentagon confirmed that B-52s, taking off from Andersen Air Force base in Guam, had flown over South Korea as part of annual joint exercises that Pyongyang insist are a rehearsal for invasion.

What a laugh. Nobody is interested in "invading" their bankrupt, backwards communist country.

If the North Koreans would just mind their own business the international community would be quite OK with leaving them alone. But for some reason these little tinpot dictators don't seem to understand that if they keep on making trouble one day their reckoning will come. Their best course of action is to keep their mouth shut and "enjoy" life in the "paradise on earth" they have created for themselves.

the Andersen base ... as well as naval bases at Japan’s main island and Okinawa, are all within the range of our precision target assets

Hopefully the NK missles are really "precision target assets"..... One day when their missles hit tokyo and seoul, people asked: you said you'll only shoot US bases.... why?.. They reply: sorry, we did aim at bases, but our missles' tolerance are some times larger... and as to the Seoul one, it's because our rocket temporary broken...

The only problem with all these idiotic threats is that sooner or later NK will have to do something stupid just to prove they aren't all hot air.

  • 3

    Fadamor

Personally, I'd much rather China be the one to "shut-down" Pyongyang. But if N.K. is ever actually so stupid as to attack U.S. forces, Japan and South Korea will no longer need to be involved as the U.S. will be taking care of business in short order, and not a single nuke needs to be uncrated. I wouldn't even spend any time rebuilding North Korea after the government and military were squashed. Just hand the territory over to South Korea and say, "Here's some more tax revenue sources. Your welcome."

  • 1

    Fadamor

    *You're

This is another reason for Okinawans wanting the US bases off Okinawa. It makes the place dangerous. Take away the US bases and there's nothing to attack here.

I agree completely! America can annihilate N Korea completely, but all missiles that manage to fly will get out first and all US bases in Okinawa and Japan proper will be prime targets, including Tokyo. Remember I had said, spies everywhere in Okinawa, Guam so they will tip off the N Koreans of impending attack esp at night with stealth bombers. For all we know the Chinese and Russians may even tip off the N Koreans with satellite warnings.

This article today http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/21/world/middleeast/israels-iron-dome-system-is-at-center-of-debate.html?hpw&_r=0&pagewanted=all is a reminder that missile defense shields don't work very well in spite of all the publicity. This adds to further suspicion on the reliability of the missile interceptors when Hagel recently ordered more of them to be built in Alaska to improve the odds of shooting down N Korean missiles.

This means nobody is safe in any war, Crazy Kim don't care, it is not going to be a one sided affair! He also figured it is better to attack Japan and US assets there instead of his own countrymen in S Korea

  • -5

    Tony Ew

America should not show too much muscle, especially nuke capable B52 flyover S Korea. It's done to send a message but should not be repeated. The reason is Krazy Kim might just be too inexperienced and trigger happy mad man and worse he might adopt the Bush Pre Emptive Strike Doctrine if he think US is mobilizing to attack N Korea first. A bad intel is all it takes to make a disastrous miscalculation like the Bush era 'yellow cake' uranium false warning of WMD. Whether it will be war and peace rest on the quality of intel Kim is going to get. Perhaps Kerry should visit Pyongyang to outdo Dennis Rodman to make little Kim feel important AND tell him in exchange for the visit to verifiably FREEZE nuke development to start.

Once a credible intel of US bomber threat is received it make sense for them to strike first. Why wait for the stealth fighters F35 & F22 to come? The US F18's stationed in Japan can carry B61 tactical nuke weapons and I suspect this is what keeps Kim awake at night!

America should tone down the military display to avoid a serious miscalculation. After all there is no need to show the world who is military super power as we all know that!

  • 0

    Miguel Nales

they should just do away with the missile's and duke it out.... When North Korea invades Okinawa, the troops will first have to hitch hike down to Pusan, take the ferry down to Shimonoseki, take a train down to the South of Kyushu and then another couple of ferries to get to Okinawa.

There's no cause to worry, because we'll have plenty of time to spot them.

And, in any case, they are not likely to make it through customs with weapons.

N Korea is a terrorist nation and she will do what it takes to terrorize her enemy. Much like the inaccurate rockets fired from Gaza into Israel, N Korea is capable of firing short range missiles to the highly populated Japanese cities in mainland Japan and Okinawa too. If they have plenty of short range missiles, Japan should be very worried as some will get through the defense shield.

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/DC-Decoder/2013/0321/Could-North-Korean-missiles-really-hit-US-military-bases-video explains the limits of N Korea capabilities.

Excerpts: Japan is clearly within range of North Korean missile forces. Pyongyang’s medium-range Nodong 1, a single-stage liquid-propelled weapon based on Soviet “Scud” technology, could reach targets across the Japanese archipelago, according to an International Institute for Strategic Studies overview of North Korea’s missile program.

But the Nodong is not exactly a “precision strike” instrument, according to US analysts. It’s accurate only to within about two or three miles

The real problem with NK is not the threats it keeps making. No, the real problem is if the NK regime fall and China and South Korea would have 25 million people streaming across their borders desperately looking for food. That's why the status-quo is preserved. It's that nobody wants to have to take responsibility for the millions of stunted peasants who are forced to call NK home. NK is largley isolated and monstrously impoverished. If NK leaders don't maintain an image of strength and power or even a sense of threat of outside invasion then hell would break loose. If some real rockets and shells will start to be fired, the South Korea and Japan can only take so much without retaliating. This will be a real mess.

Take so much? I beg to differ here. Japan WONT just let NK lob a few missiles into Japan and if there are any, heaven forbid it ever happens, any victims, Japan will certainly retaliate, either on it's own, or through the US.
