Again we have the US sending out propoganda messages, and again we have the paranoid-schizophrenic effect, and again would expect some reaction from the Japanese Government, nothing new.
Koizumi obviously did a good job in building relations with North Korea.
The economy in Japan and the US is obviously very unstable, and for some reason the US needs to have some war or something for lack of something better to do, or for that matter another distraction to avoid the embarrasement it is facing.
So while Koizumi, as hard as he tried to make things better, we have to have the masses, (paranoid, prideful, selfish, schizos), ruin everything for everyone else.
The Japanese peace sign "v(^_^)v", was originally intended to mean something. So for the millions out there that have had their picture taken in this manner, you better live up to what you pose, otherwise, maybe you deserve to reap what you sow.
Don't worry about the what if scenario, because it will only bring us further down this road.
Just worry about the why scenario, ie. why North Korea, a population of 24 million, and a per capita of $1,700, thats 17man en per year, or about $3 dollars a day, that feels like it has been laughed at and messed around with by the entire Western world, throughout its entire history, and is pissed out of its mind. At three $3 dollars a day, I would be pissed.
I think Japan should adopt North Korea and give it what it needs to get from say $3 dollars a day to maybe at least $5 dollars a day. Heck if we can afford to give 120M people $120 to almost little effect, imagine the impact to North Korea. They are our ancestors are they not? Koizumi managed to meet with them did he not?
I bet if you asked Koizumi to go again, he might. I bet he would be able to at least make Japan less liable in North Korea's eyes, and I bet it would make it harder for the US to try to board Korean vessels, which would definitely trigger a mess.
It doesn't matter where the nuclear hole is going to be, because we'll still be breathing it years later. Anyone visited the Hiroshima museum lately?

It is reported today that North Kores is the world's 11th largest exporter of weapons. The Kang Nam 1 that the US is tailing is said to be headed for Myanmar. http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20090621-00000505-reu-int
Where is all that foreign capital going towards, I wonder? Obviously not to the people...

North Korea can't reach the US, so the US can do whatever it wants.
Now that it might be able to reach Hawaii, the US wants to wipe North Korea off the map, at the expense of South Korea, and Japan.
However, if Koizumi goes into North Korea again, he will be able to play negotiator between North Korea and the West.
North Korea wants a humane standard of living without what it sees as the poisons of the West, although the West doesn't see itself as poisoned.
My Father told me that when his Pilot friend flew the Japanese Government to North Korea many years ago, they were fed North Korean curry at a diplomatic event. This is not luxury. And investment into arms was the only way to defend a country of 24M, from what it sees as the greatest threat to humanity: Capitalism, Materialism, and Freedom (Psychopathic).
Otherwise, South Korea and Japan are basically toast.
Japan went into Korea many years ago, raped their women, and mentally traumatized the nation. Recently Koizumi negotiated man-to-man with Kim Jong IL, and he was kind enough to return some Japanese who wished to return, despite years of hardship and isolation.
So if Japan joins the West in on the sanctions game, and futher chokes the well being of people living on 3 or 5 dollars a day, whether this money is wasted or not, it will be the end of the world as we know it for South Korea and Japan, and maybe this is what we deserve.
The pattern at the international, and domestic level, is the income gap between the "haves" and "have nots". This is what is destroying overall wealth, and is affecting the entire world. The only way to stop the bleeding is to help the poor and oppressed.
It is the Middle Way, it is the call of JC, and it is the Jihad. Everything else is Paranoid, Schizophrenic, and Psychopathic. Enjoy your dinner.

There's nothing said here that we didnt know already. NK has already done their dry runs with dummy warheads and underground tests.
The US will not be so stupid to get caught in a ground war again in NK, they will use their air superiority to strike deep into NK, knowing that if the strikes are defensive, China and Russia will have no other choice but to step aside.
Any big move on NK's part will be suicide.

jhk, Koizumi retired a while back...

is it informed? or paranoid... Yes the defense industry does hype up the fear... but let's see in the history of this part of the world there really hasn't been any precedence for trust or peace... (If I was the leader of my people, charged with their safety I'm going to err on the side of caution...besides the US, ROK and Japan have been democracies for some time!!! Are you saying all the people of those 3 nations are that stupid and you are so INFORMED...please get your head out of the conspiracy magazines and off your soap box) As for the scholar's credentials are laughable at first...besides anyone claiming they know what DPRK is going to do should be laughed at(loudly). If anyone knew what they were going to do we wouldn't be having this discussion!!! Second his reasoning cause of the "U.S. military presence in Japan"...UHHHH there are more US troops in ROK, is the Great Leader just going to just ignore them?....Where did he get that prediction from the pyschic channel?...What an idiot! Who knows what DPRK is doing, accept playing the age old hand of rattle sabers; the world pays attention; so it then agrees to give up some of its weapons that it shouldn't have developed in the 1st place and then the other 5 nations gives it material support to prop up its dysfunctional state in return... Nothing has changed... move along nothing new to see here!
Maybe...Maybe someone should just call their bluff and have the ROK, Japan and the US all board their ship together simultaneously on route to Myanmar (another wonderful country who plays the world ticket of pariah well)Kim Jong Il or the leaders in that country may be crazy but they aren't stupid they have played ROK's, Japan's, China's, Russia's and the US's interests against each other for 50 years now ...If the world doesn't follow suit on the council's declarations what is the point of having a UN security council or a UN for that matter.
DPRK may have just made the ultimate chess game mistake... the diverse 5 nations are now sharing a common interest: no nukes on the Korean peninsula. Unlike 50 years ago the US, ROK, China, Japan and Russia are so interlinked in business deals, and the US is no longer feared as an immediate threat in China and Russia (seeing how it is bogged down with other military matters) that all the parties know well this isn't about regime change it is about shutting up a 2 bit punk country like DPRK and knocking them back down to be the respectful Confucian Asian citizen who is receiving material support to maintain its miserly status quo. What once was Japan, ROK, and the US's headache has now become Russia and China's. They aren't going allow regime change but they aren't going to allow NK to pick a fight and then come running to them to protect it as was done in the past. Whatever the outcome it will be interesting to see who blinks first, the world or the Dear Leader (or the the Brillant Comrade ... or whoever is in charge of that miserly nation)
jhk at 06:07 AM JST - 23rd June
Do you think North Korea would talk to someone like Aso? Maybe, but I still think Koizumi would be safer.
How about we let the Japanese decide on this. Not some 2 bit punk living in Washington.
What's your problem with North Korea? Why do you need to worry about North Korea?
Why don't you worry about California? It looks like it might be just as poor as North Korea in a few months.
societymike at 08:55 AM JST - 23rd June
YuriOtani, Despite the threats, NK really doesn't have the ability to effectively harm Japan. Their missile tests are already "everything they got". Furthermore, the rockets they shot are slow, very old, and lack an effective guidance system, they are blindly shot in a general direction, like Korean War technology. Thye are so easy to knock out of the sky it's funny. There is a huge net of anti-missile defense batteries along the NK border, in the ocean, and among the US bases in South Korea. Then, you have all the missile defense locations IN Japan, Misawa, Yokota, Nigata, Okinawa, etc. There are enough missiles in place at each single location to defend an entire attack by NK. US troops will fight for Japan just as hard as Japanese because the troops don't see it as "defending Japan". They see it as defending themselves and their bases. It's their lives at stake and their familes who live on the bases. It's what they train for 24/7 365 days a year. You would be foolish to think otherwise. NK is full of empty threats, they have virtually no power or technology and their only allie is too interested in US capitalism and it's future to worry about siding with NK.
Also, modern South Koreans are far more forgiving of Japan. There are small numbers who are driven to hate of course, but they are not the majority. Today's younger generation of S.Koreans like what japan has to offer and in many ways emulate everything Japanese. I see it everyday since I'm living here for a while.

NK is going to get us all. They want to blow us all off the face of the earth.
sfjp330 at 04:14 AM JST - 24th June
Yuri Otani, anything is possible regarding NK. I do not want to see Japan build it's military at this time. China is currently involved in all aspects of peaceful resolution with NK. As you know, China has substantial influence on NK behavior due to direct economic and political ties. China also do not want to have any direct conflict with U.S. due to strong economic ties and relationship. Last year, China had almost 200 billion dollars in direct trade surplus with U.S. and substantial investment is U.S. securities. Also, the Japanese have over 18,000 companies in mainland China. They are first and second leading trade partner. China does not want to mess this up and go back to what it was during Mao's regime. I believe China will be the main player in a peaceful resolution with NK soon.

Of all possible scenarios, this writer's conclusion would have to be more of an extreme view. The publicly available info doesn't support a DPRK offensive towards Japan. For Asia Specialists, this link spells out the likely scenario:

IF Wilki is accurate, the 6parties talks are in question. 180 degree change in protracted negotiations doesn't bode well for the future, but ROK may not have a choice.

Locally, the "winds of war" can be felt.
societymike at 03:36 PM JST - 24th June
btw, google the "google earth north korea project". You can download a rather interesting database/bookmark of EVERY item of interest in North Korea. Created by a professor with a Phd and a team of people around the world, they have mapped out the entire country, it's power grids, roads, defense locations, VIP homes, fence lines, bunkers, missile sites, artillery, water and oil supply lines, etc. It's simply amazing what you can see in it.

Is it true that they have a complete replica of Seoul, in detail down to the insides of department stores, all built underground, where they train their operatives in 'ways of the enemy'?
