So, does this mean we may get cheaper flights out of Narita? I'd like to hope so, but I won't hold my breath.

What does that mean?

It means that 'heavy' planes can now use both runways for take-off and landings - The Northern runway was not long enough for all aircraft.

Will the domestic terminal still close around midnight? Expanding capacity is good but won't they likely have to extend service hours?

Neither Narita nor Haneda have much chance of becoming international hubs in Asia. Other than the compulsory facilities of check-in, immigration, customs and baggage pick-up, they have little to offer travelers. A poor selection of duty free-goods and retail outlets; a few restaurants with very limited opening hours and nothing open beyond 20:30; nowhere comfortable to sit or relax between flights and no leisure options; poor connections to Tokyo; inconvenient departure and arrival times at both ends; and few cheap flights where they are positioned as a hub, e.g. Taiwan to New York via Narita, Manila to London via Narita, there are far more attractive hub options such as Korea and Hong Kong and also cheap direct flights. Compete with Singapore? Not a chance!

why do my past flying experiences down under come back to haunt me here of all places?

A think both Haneda and Narita would benefit from CHEAPER restaurants!! The ones in Haneda are a complete rip off!! Way too over priced!! They should also put a few 7-11s!! Etc... You just want a cheap beer, hi chu or snacks at Haneda before boarding the plane without having to pay 3,000 yen for a crappy meal!! They need a McDonalds and a CocoIchibanya too!!

another big problem with narita is that there aren't any late night/early morning flights because of noise regualtions.

The title of this article is misleading. If they are talking about Runway B (16L/34R) that opened up in October 2009.

When it is cheaper to fly to LA at certain times of the year than fly inside of Japan you know there is a problem.

This is the mega downside of this airport. "Express" train is just BS. This morning I had the choice of 1h40 to Shibuya or the same with the bus. I have travelled to most cities with real express trains to downtown. But not these BMW (NEX for instance) riding on 30 km/h tracks. Pathetic!

They need to make train go direct to Tokyo Station and put a damn bar car on the train .. with TV and sports..
