Net bonus income of wage-earning households in Japan down 100,000 yen

TOKYO —

The net bonus income of households headed by company employees fell this year by an average of 100,000 yen from a year earlier amid the recession, a survey by a life insurance firm showed Thursday. The survey of 500 housewives conducted in mid-June by Sompo Japan DIY Life Insurance Co. found that the after-tax bonus income of 53.6 percent of the households had declined from a year earlier, almost two times more than in last year’s survey. The average net bonus income fell by 98,000 yen to 655,000 yen. The decline in bonus income prompted 61.8 percent of those surveyed to cancel or change plans for travel or clothing purchases.

In the survey, 61.6 percent said their lives were difficult. The percentage of people saying their lives were difficult stood at 56.8 percent among households with an annual income of between 8 million to 10 million yen, 58.7 percent among those with an annual income of between 6 million to 8 million yen and 81.6 percent among those with an annual income of less than 6 million yen.

Whe way most of the companies are performing and the economic situation of Japan, some of the companies will start eliminating bonus completely within short time. With profits shrinking, it will become a matter of survival for these companies. Next year, there will be another additional 100,000 yen reduction. Japan still depends too much on export for their profit. There will be fewer and fewer surviving companies within 5 years.
