New Year holiday exodus begins at airports

TOKYO —

The New Year holiday exodus began at airports across Japan on Friday.

This year, many people are taking advantage of an extended nine-day break. The last day of business for most companies is Friday. Next week, Jan 1-3 are national holidays and many companies have given employees Friday Jan 4 off as well, adding up to a nine-day holiday.

Narita Airport said it expected 42,000 people to depart on Friday. Travel agent JTB said it had arranged overseas tours for 657,000 people throughout Japan, with Europe, the U.S. and Southeast Asia the most popular destinations.

The increase in budget carriers flying in and out of Japan has made Asian destinations especially attractive, JTB said.

The return rush is expected to peak between Jan 3 and Jan 6.

Probably some mildly ticked off folks who are headed overseas with the sudden jump in the yen rate. Have fun and be safe!

Ah ... once again can relax in those nearly empty subway/train/bus seats. So staying in my local territory here in comfy Tokyo ...

A nation of 120 million people taking their vacation at exactly the same time. Great idea.

I'll have to use a sick day to get that one off.
