“What we do expect is these disputes will be done in a fashion without coercion, and that ultimately will be satisfying and decided between governments and without military interventions.” In the wider Asia-Pacific region, he said it was important to build “a code of conduct” in waters that every country, including China, will be obliged to follow. to work together to ensure the (security) environment is strong enough to withstand any shocks.

You have to listen very carefully to what this old soldier said! he's professional and a real inside man, his words are so logical, without any gap, and much more sophiscated than what those who like Hillare Clinton said! It's definitely the most clear US policy! I believe the US won't let JP shoot the first shot, and the US must have some kind of hot line, secretly, with China for whole situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea.

No new bases planned in Asia: U.S. commander

    Does this mean, no Henoko?

    Hooray!

Asked about the ongoing tensions between China and Japan over territorial claims to a set of islands in the East China Sea, Locklear repeated that the U.S. did not take a position on the archipelago’s final sovereignty.

Even if USA were the ones to give the administration of those islands to Japan. Very coherent.

@Bertie.......you know (major sigh here)....live and learn.

It wouldn't be a new base, just an extension of an existing one!

Of course, to USA a strong bond with China is more convenient than a strong bond with Japan, economically. USA will leave Japan to play the role of the villain, so they won't be forced to support their "ally" since they say they have not any responsabilities in the Senkaku/Diaoyu business (even if they have them), while they will continue to take advantage from this division in Asia.

    Alex80-san,

It's probably more to do with the huge amount of money the U.S.A. has borrowed from China.

Before any escalations happen between japan and China, I highly believe japanese will have to think twice about it. The World will probably realize who the real instigator is, and will join hands together in a boycott so japan can be put into a thinking situation.

There is no new base requirement. Let a exporting country be cut off by its heel.

    Expansionism.

BertieWooster, there is an existing US base in Henoko called Camp Schwab.

No more new bases can only be interpreted to mean nobody want any more US bases or US is too broke to do so. Even the Philippines and Vietnam are hesitant to let US have new bases but even if they change their minds later, US do not really want to have new bases that can heighten tension there since China may park a few missiles in the Spratlys.

Australia is a good choice for more US assets but the Aussies don't need this to annoy China since they are close trading partners. Australia is a good compromise location for US Pacific Power Projection because it is further away and will calm down China a bit.

It would be even more productive and cost-saving to close USA bases. The is too much waste and expense just in housing the military and all the dependents. Down-size and drone-up should be the motto now!

No new bases in Asia doesn't mean that they don't plan new bases in Australia. Australia is near but not in Asia.

But doing so, the US will have to tone down its portrayal as China as the enemy.

Australia is not anti-Chinese at all. It couldn't be. Chinese presence there is huge. Sydney looks to be about half Chinese and is the play spot for rich mainland Chinese.

Having a US base in Sydney might be an interesting idea. I'd like to see what happens if a US serviceman tried to rape a Sydney girl. He would definitely come off worse! It would be a most unhappy ending.

    Completely agree.

Down-size and drone-up should be the motto now!

    No drones, please.

Drones, mines and waterboarding should be universally banned.

    @ aligator,

"NO" JP will not think twice if PRC will intrude any of JP's territories! The world already know who is the real instigator, the copycats, smugglers and the pirates who wants more! AND even if the US stays neutral if a miiltary clash sparks between JP and PRC, full scale, and JP granted contitutional amendment to art 96 declaring a full pledge MILITARY, PRC won't and just like before 3 times already, have a chance. PRC will never win an all out war with JP. That's a FACT that even US, a close ally, significantly reconizes justifying their neutral instance. Get a calculator and start solving the equations!

Mines kill the unsuspecting children on land and the fishermen at sea. Someone has to catch a prisoner to use waterboarding. Drones are safe for the user and deadly for the unsuspecting criminals. The paid vacation for military and dependents in Japan must end and Japan must change its constitution. 100 years in Japan 2045 - not much to brag about there.

RUSSIAN?? KOREAN?? See what kind of reaction you will get, asked this many a time in izakayas here in Tokyo, try it!

"this part of the world has been pretty safe"

Not according to the people opposed to MCAS Futenma and its planned relocation to Heneko.
