The number of foreign tourists to Japan in May was 1, 641,800, a 49.6% increase over May 2014, according to figures released by the Japan Tourism Agency. The figure is a monthly record for May, the agency said.
The total number of tourists for January-May was 7.53 million, up 45% over 2014.
The highest number came from China (387,200), followed by Taiwan with 339,700, the agency said, adding the increased numbers are the result of the weaker yen, relaxed visa requirements and more flights by low cost carriers to regional airports.

With the yen being such a weak currency now and for the foreseeable future, Japan is a bargain basement for Asian tourists. "Dirt cheap" is the regular sentiment I have heard. So of course they flock to the country, who wouldn't??

Anyone who has objections to getting fingerprinted and photographed.

You think entering Japan is a hassle? Try other countries like the USA, etc.
More tourists is good brings money to the country and fosters international understanding. Korean and Chinese like Japan and Japanese products.

anyone who doesn't want to get fingerprinted and photographed.
What other countries "should I try?" I had no problems in Canada when I went. People were nice and polite. So different from Japan AND the US

Are they tourists in that they go to all the tourist sites or are they buyers and go to all the department stores and appliance shops to get stuff cheap?
Aly Rustom
I would say there's a bit of both.
Does not foster international understanding AT ALL. The more foreign tourists come, the more the Japanese government and people feel that they have to 'protect' Japan. They want tourists here to take their money. They don't care about cultural exchange.
