Number of new cancer patients reaches record high

The number of new patients diagnosed with cancer in 2012 were the highest ever, a recently released report reveals.

The report, released by Japan’s National Cancer Center Japan, shows that the total number of new patients diagnosed with cancer in 2012 — the most recent data — stood at 865,000, an increase of 14,000 patients from the previous year. That is the highest recorded data up to now, representatives of the center say.

According to the report, Akita, Wakayama, Hiroshima, Shimane and Tottori prefectures had the highest number of cancer patients for male patients, while Akita, Tokyo, Ishiwaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka had the highest number for female patients.

The study further reveals that the total number of stomach cancer patients are found more in the Japan Sea area, which many believe has relations with overall salt consumption in the local diet. According to the study, patients with lung cancer and liver cancer tend to be from western Japan.

When you have an aging population the odds of different types of diseases increasing in numbers is not totally, or should not be totally surprising nor unexpected.

What about the Pacific Ocean's radiation?

Wait until the effects of Japan's highly carcinogenic fish and vegetables start to rear their ugly head. Rates of cancer will go through the roof and remain extremely high for a generation or longer. You can't dump millions of tons of radioactive water into the ocean without eventually paying the piper.

More cancers found, but were more patients being screened, or were they using better detection methods?

I would not discount any cancer causes as Japan continues to pick up all the bad habits of "modernization"; poor dietary choices, pesticides and chemical fertilizers common as water, and lack of exercise. But I can only facepalm when some are so very quick to discount ingestion of nuclear particles spewed from the Fukushima reactors. Yes, I know this is from 2012. Some cancers can develop that rapidly in the right conditions. Expect more as time goes by.
