Will the threat of a volcano or major earthquake affect the restarts?

Of course not! Nuclear Power is bigger than her, been around before her, and will be debated after her. She was just a nameplate on a desk in an office and while she's away until she pops again, the Nuclear debate will go on with the next old guys in charge of it.

If 59% of the local Kagoshima residents are opposed to the nuclear restart, wouldn't that be a majority in a TRUE democray? Isn't it about time to vote these politicians out of office, since they have decided they no longer work for the people?

The Japanese government’s plan to restart nuclear reactors shut down after the Fukushima disaster will not be affected by Monday’s resignation of the industry minister

Nothing will stop the Japanese government's plan to restart the reactors. Japan is not a democracy! It is a Fasciest state controlled by beaurocrats and their cronies. Many cities have rejected the restart of the reactors with majority votes against it, but the government does not care. They are gonna go ahead anyway. Democracy? Don't make me laugh!

Are we to understand that the dismissal of this inept product of nepotism, poster girl Obuchi, will not affect nuclear power policy? Really? Oh, what a relief. My children are still safe. Her complete lack of talent for anything together with her blatant abuse of the law and denial that it was a "private matter" makes her an ideal candidate to be in charge of our nuclear industry. We are still waiting for the announcement as to when a criminal investigation will begin. Figure my balding husband is more likely to win Miss World...

"And neither will the overwhelmingly opposed voting public, it seems."

You mean the voting public that has given virtually ceded all power to these rightists? Those who have locally and nationally thrown out the (admittedly incompetent) opposition pols who actually opposed nuclear power. Ditto state secrets, neoliberalism, and fascist apologists. I may loathe the LDP with a passion but lets not let voters off.

Kagoshima is more than 1000km from the capital. I drive 1000 km from Kagoshima to Maizuru every year, so maybe Yamaguchi, the prime ministers home pref. Is about this distance and expertice.

By now, Obuchi knows she was used to open up nuclear power plant. Suppose Mitsubishi, Sanyo and Mitsui talk with Obuchi on their Satellite solar energy capture system beside photos of their vertical solar panes plants and she visit Kagoshima, find hot and all day sunshine, and convince her that nuclear power plants are obsolete.

Maybe she trip to USA to see many states do not have nuclear energy plants.

She might not be PM but can be as a popular energy Lady.

Obuchi's departure won't affect nuclear reactor restarts

And why should it? It's not as if the citizens' opinions matter. The government will do what they want.

"Now that she's gone, Abe has lost that reassuring presence and it's unlikely that he's going to be able to find anyone as convincing as her? Kingston said
