And people wonder about the TPP? These farmers could be producing fruits and vegetables for the country that they can actually eat. If Japan wants to cut down on it's over 60% rate of imported foods folks like these farmers need to get into action.

If I had 300,000 yen just laying around, I sure wouldn't use it to buy 2 mangoes. Spend over $1200 on one piece of fruit? That's crazy. And these watermelons may look cute, but they will have almost no edible fruit inside, so what's the point?

Why kill somebody's creativity by criticising his efforts to produce unique shape fruits and vegetables ?

This is an amazing coincidence but I saw an odd-shaped pair of melons just yesterday.

"about the size of a baby's head"

That is the main takeaway.

Well just something different and unique.

How about charging the same price for melons, mangoes and other fruits that the Japanese companies charge for there products overseas like the cars, cameras and other electronic rip offs. There will be no trade deficit anywhere.

It's ornament fruit. People who buy it are not stranger than people who spend tons of money over expensive Iphones or other overpriced gadget.

Japanese consumers are used to paying through the nose for fruit,

Over at the Shibuya Nishimura luxury fruit shop in downtown Tokyo,

This year’s must-have luxury fruit is a particular brand of strawberry, with a single berry currently selling for around 50,000 yen.

We are just talking fruit here people. Does Japan's obsession with luxury and conspicuous consumption know no bounds? Bet the watermelon I bought today for 15 cents a pound, and the pint of strawberries for $1.99, will taste just as good. Not to mention the blueberries at 87 cents.

No. They'll lack the essential ingredients of **ishiness and ***ishnesh.
