And the woman is now dead I hope. Because if she managed to just plain old recover and is now doing fine, then perhaps there is no great need to report on this in such a scandalous tone. This flu is overblown Japan.

Sure, publication, especially in US journal is very important. It improves the chances for promotion, projects funding, etc... And public awareness, and readiness to tackle the potentially mutated flu virus with different drug from the very onset of the infection? What's this? Mottainai of course...

MeanRingo> I guess you haven't followed reporting in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, UK, Argentine...if you fail to understand the importance of the news of virus developing resistance (similar cases were reported on Denmark and Argentine with bgi headlines in UK and U.S. news), sorry for you.

    EUgirl. IS the woman alive?

It seems that treating influenza cases with Tamiflu, even if the patient does not have a dangerously high fever is going to increase the chance of influenza becoming resistant.

I doubt "the government" wrote the paper and send it. More likely the researchers at that institute. however, I don't think they did anything wrong. The faster the scientific community has data on the new virus, the fasters solutions will be found.

This seems to be pretty much like everyone else does it. At least in Denmark, reputedly the first place where a resistant strain of the new H1N1 was found, the case was reported to the news at some point after the patient had gotten well again. How long they "delayed" reporting it, I don't know, it doesn't say so in the press release.

Doesn't matter much, resistant strains are expected and make no difference for the recommended precautions and treatments. This is indeed not important news.
