Osaka to use shareholder rights against Kansai Electric's nuclear policy

The Osaka government, which owns 8.9% of Kansai Electric Co, is planning to exercise its shareholder rights at the utility's general meeting in June to propose a total abolition of nuclear power in the area.

The Osaka government, led by Mayor Toru Hashimoto, held an energy strategy summit earlier this week, at which a number of proposals were pitched to Kansai Electric Power Co shareholders, TV Asahi reported.

To replace the nuclear reactors, the summit proposed short-term, high-output thermal energy plants with a long-term plan to set up renewable energy infrastructure. It will also call on Kansai Electric to cut costs by reducing the number of employees, TV Asahi reported.

And this intent of Osaka Government was off course already known to Edano, when he made his play a couple of days ago stating a 9.3% shortage of electricity in Kansai during the summer. Perhaps someone should look into Edanos personal stock portfolio?

Marcelito I would be careful about praising Hashimoto too much, he is also a rabidly right wing megalomaniac. Apart from creating regulations to punish teachers who dont stand when kimigayou is played I dont see what exactly he has accomplished....at least not what he has accomplished that would seperate him from the all talk no action model of politicians that you deride.

I note that threatening to put a shareholders proposal on the KEPCO meeting agenda is pretty much the most toothless action he could take. For starters, shareholders proposals never pass and I 100% guarantee this one wont. Why? Because there was already one on last years agenda and it failed to gather even 10% of the vote even in the direct aftermath of Fukushima (TEPCO also had a similar vote and a similar result). Also these proposals are not binding on management anyway so even if it did pass (and, like I said, it won`t).

In other words this is all talk and no action. Not that I disagree with what he is doing in this particular case, mind you. I`m just saying that this is a very very unpleasant person whose political career indicates more concern for self-promotion than actually benefitting Osaka. God forbid he would ever become PM.

@senseiman

"I dont see what exactly he has accomplished...."

Let's see

Got rid of 4 offices outside of Japan such as Beijing etc. Why did a city need foreign offices to begin with ? It was a complete waste of money.

Redued Osaka city bus drivers' salary by 38 %. It was ridiculous that the entire bus division was losing money for 28 years straight but the bus drivers were making over 8,000,000 yen

Made it mandatory to make any request from city counsel members public. Now any request from city counselmen will be made public. Up until now, some people were hired because of who they know.

Stopped selling Osaka water. Believe it not, the city was selling filtered water to promote how clean their water was and last year they lost 20,000,000 !!!!! Hashimoto just said no and they stopped it.

Decided to sell most of the stocks the city owns, except a few like Kepco. Never understood why a city needs to own any stock anyways, another good decision.

With his ultra popularity, he doesn't have to worry about how to win the next election. So he refuses to have a cozy relationship with the union unlike his predecessors. Now the city employees have to spend normal business hours to serve Osaka city residents like they should, instead of union meetings etc.

I can think of 30 more things he has done but don't have enough spaces or energy.

So do you still say he is all talk and no action ?

Oh, btw, I believe he should be PM in the future. You guys complain about typical Japanese politicians who don't do anything.

Now finally we have someone who takes leadership and make changes and you still complain. Which one do you want ? Make up your mind,

If you want a decisive leader who will make changes, then you are not gonna like everything he does. As long as I agree with most decisions he makes, i will keep supporting him over typical J politicians.

You might want to remember that when the public said no to burning waste from Tohoku he ignored then and agreed to it. The guy is a snake and only cares about HIS opinions, not the public's.

-7 ( +3 / -9 )

Hide, I would like someone that does what the public wants them to do, not what he wants to do. I would like someone who isn't a bully and tries to end people's careers if they don't agree with his line of thinking. I would also like someone who isn't a right leaning fascist.

@tmarie

Yomiuri shimbun released poll results last week and his party "Ishin" got the top spot in the Kansai region, with 24 % support, over both LDP adn DPJ.

This means he does have the public's support. Or do you want to wait until we find someone who gets close to 100% support like Kim Johng Illl or Sadam Hussein used to (they did under questionable cercumstances) ?

Again, you are not gonna find someone whose every decision you like.

-1 ( +1 / -3 )

Hide, 24% is NOT public support. If anything, that shows the support for him and his party has dropped. I haven't asked for 100% but a nice majority would do and he certainly doesn't have that.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

tmarie,

Again his party Ishin got the highest support, if you say that's not public support, then who has it ? Neither LDP nor DPJ got higher support than Hashimoto after all the money and negative campagin they spent against him.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Omedeto Kansai. Edano???? mmmmm he is just doing what he is being told. hehehehehe

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Again his party Ishin got the highest support, if you say that's not public support, then who has it ? The highest support doesn't equal "the public's support". Why you can't understand that is beyond me. What about the other 76% who DON"T support him?? People have stepped down with such little support in other countries.

-3 ( +1 / -4 )

tmarie

So he can't do anything until he gets 50% support at least? Majority of the Japanese don't support any particular party, using your logic, no politicians can do anything,

Why you can't understant this is beyond me.

Then you must love typical Japanese politicians who try to please too many people and end up doing nothing.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Hide, I haven't said such a thing. You are grasping at straws to argue. Clearly, the guy doesn't have the support of the people - 24% is pathetic considering all the hype and the turn out he HAD.

I don't love any Japanese politicians as of recent because they are all the same - selfish and only carry about their agenda and their pride. Hashimoto came in promising to be different but he's not. The only thing he's different in is his age and how he makes it obvious that he's out for blood with regards to those he sees as the enemy. Not exactly someone I want in power of a country that is falling apart day by day.

By all means, think he's great but the rest of us don't have to agree with you - nor him.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

tmarie,

What do you want him to do ? "well, i only got 24% support so I will just do nothing but sit in my office and stamp some documents and attend meetings".

"People have stepped down with such little support in other countries"

That's what pretty much every single Japanese PM does and you guys complain, and they get nothing done. Hashimoto is different, he actually gets lots of things done as I listed already, and a lot more.

"the rest of us don't have to agree with you". Well, the rest of you supports no party or the LDP or the DPJ, who got less support than Hashimoto . So you have two choice, do nothing as there is no majority or do as Hashimoto sees fit, since he got the highest support. I support making changes as he sees fit.

I don't know why you complian about him cutting unnecessary expenses. Do you want your tax money to go to overpaid bus drivers and international offices ? I don't.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

How about he stops putting HIS agenda first and looks at what the public wants?

What can be done is how about Japan gets rid of this daddy hands down his seat to his son and lets the incompetence continue? How about the Japanese get rid of the "shoganai" attitude and start demanding answers from their government? The public has created this problem and look the other way and play the poor me game with how badly this country is being run.
