A paraglider in Shiga Prefecture got snagged by a power line leaving the man piloting the glider suspended in mid-air for nearly 3 1/2 hours before he was finally rescued, police said Thursday.
According to police, the incident occurred in the town of Ryuo just before 4 p.m. Wednesday. NTV reported that a 59-year-old man became entangled after getting caught by a power line while flying in his motor-powered glider. He then remained stuck nearly 30 meters off the ground.
Firefighters eventually rescued him over three hours later after having to turn off the power in the lines. They placed a large mat under him and then, using a ladder equipped truck, were able to bring him down from the wires.

Sounds like some 59 year old man used up a lifetime of luck! Glad he's okay.

I used to fly hang-gliders - even taught the sport - and I always made sure that where I was flying it was safe and open air with NO wires anywhere near takeoff, flight zone and landing. This guy took a risk that any real pilot wouldn't. And FYI, whoever wrote this headline and story - a paraglider is not the same thing as a motorized glider (which in fact is an aircraft).

@TrevorPeace1
All the news programs I saw called it a paraglider, But yes, you are right....what he was using was not a paraglider.

I'm amazed the guy is alive to tell the tail. I hope they bill him for the rescue.

I think what he was riding was a powered parachute. It has a little motor-fan which makes it a bit different from a paraglider.
That Guy
I think some of you are being a bit presumptive. There are many reasons besides carelessness that this might have happened. Engine trouble or sudden strong gusts of wind perhaps. Also, he might have been trying to get a particular destination rather than just fly around for fun and land back where he started. Also, this being Japan, I don't think there are many places where you can actually be so very far away from power lines.

he is lucky he was not eletricuted. Must be inconvinient to residents who voulf not use electricity for a while.
