Pet associations deny rumors of pet slaughter in disaster-hit areas

Rumors of massive pet slaughter in areas hit by the tsunami after the March 11 earthquake have been circulating on the Internet and social network sites this week, but they aren’t true, according to four pet associations in Japan, including the Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA).
According to Twitter and Facebook users, pets left wandering after the tsunami have been killed if their owners didn’t claim them within a few days of their discovery.
“Those rumors are not based on facts,” the Japan Pet Care Association announced on their website. It said that pets found within the devastated areas are taken care of and treated accordingly as “natural disaster pet victims.”
