I've always wondered what would happen if one of two engines failed/turned off. So can I assume a jet airliner can also fly on one engine?

Any plane with two or more engines can land on a third of the engines. If a 747 had a single engine it would likely be a crash landing, but controlled crash landing.

People should line up at their airports and demand these planes never be used again.

Oh wait, I forgot that it's flown by Japanese people so there's never a chance it can fail and fall on populated area or anything like that....

It's a trade-off basroil, they're taking the risk for the benefit.

Not really, he's just doing his job and duty, under a condition that is not as rare as it sounds. If the situation was a total lack of power, at low altitude, and the guy managed to land the craft with no casualties (serious injury or death), then perhaps. But this isn't all that uncommon, even in Japan. Here's a few more: JAL

ANA is harder to search due to the 787 engine problems spamming search results (even filtered ones), and JAC is too small a company to find a good log. These engine problems are usually not an issue that will cause harm, especially if contained and the pilot is well trained.

So on top of being a nuclear expert you are also an expert in aviation matters too! Give the pilot a bit of credit he did a good job even if airchair experts think its a piece of cake. Might be on microsoft flight sim but in the real world with real stress the guy did a great job

Quite interesting read. Apparently the Dash 8 (this aircraft) has auto correction for single engine flight, so the pilot would be able to fly it almost entirely the same as if both engines were functional. While certainly an emergency landing, it is not a life threatening one, and the only reason to land is to avoid double engine failure (which would be bad). The pilot wouldn't even need to do anything other than signal he had engine trouble and reroute (then land normally).

This is why commercial aircraft don't have a single engine. Navy aircraft also ("one if by land, two if by sea"). So I wonder how well the single engine F-35 will be accepted by Navy pilots.
