(or whatever you call killing off emperors. Empricide? Imprecide?)

You call it a good start toward joining other countries in the 21st century.

I think he should be sent to a rehab facility....that deals with addictions...not the Imperial Household Hospital....One month stays....who babysits ??? Imperial Family should be setting an example....for treatment of alcoholism...

sk4ek -- good post. Given that he's being treated at the Imperial Household Hospital, it is almost certain that he is not getting any form of group therapy sessions, since he's possibly the only patient in the whole place. Which furthers, koneko22's post. Alchoholism is treated much like mental illness here -- denial.

and we get the privilege of paying taxes to support his alcoholism..wonderful

Actually, we get the privilege of paying taxes to support all alcoholics in this country. And anyone else with a medical condition.

I've never met a funnier, more "down to earth" person, who was not afraid to joke with me, a "gaijin" - 30 years ago - while ski-ing together near Nozawa-onsen. I was so sorry when I first heard he had cancer. However, as my mother would say (when I told her she should stop smoking): "If you can't do something you enjoy in life, then it's not worth living anyway"... GAMBATTE Mikasa-no-Miya Sama ! Thank you for our funny and interesting conversations! The photo of us together is still hanging on the wall in our living-room.

Guess the treatments aren't working very well. Maybe he should try the beer an hour taper down routine and try to dry out on his own.

    Thats not completly true !

"He" has been in Kurihama National Hospital (in Kanagawa prefecture) a little bit after myself (almost 3 years ago) and had gone at that time thru some medecine AND a lot of group therapy sessions...Kurihama hospital is said to have taken model from England hospital for alcoolism and has been created around 20 years ago. So Japan from that moment is trying to treated that addiction like another one not like a mental illness like before...there was more than300 hundreds "patients" at the time i was there, 10% women and 90% men. "He" has "stayed " there for 1 month only and have not succeed as we see he is trying once more to stop his addiction. For myself i have been in that hospital for 6 weeks and havent drink a gram of alcool for 2 years and 7 months now.

I am only lucky i think and have a bit more of will.

He doesn`t seem to have a full time job. So does he rack this up on Shakai Hoken or Kokumin Hoken?
