Princess Mako, 22, the oldest daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko, left Haneda airport on Wednesday morning for London to begin one year of study in England.

Mako will study for a master's degree in museology at the University of Leicester's graduate school in central England and will stay in a student dorm.

The princess was educated at the prestigious Gakushuin School in her primary, junior high, and high school years, then studied English at University College Dublin in 2010 and the University of Edinburgh in 2012. She graduated from the International Christian University in Tokyo in March with a degree in Art and Cultural Heritage.

Mako is expected to return to Japan briefly during the New Year period to attend to some official duties.

some lucky sap might meet her and fall in love with a princess........... Strange choice of course - studying how to be a curator or run a museum.

Why strange? It's not like she'd ever be allowed to be empress or anything.

I hope she gets an English boyfriend just to piss everyone off

Best of luck to her. It's a great degree but the course is pretty tough!

On a related note, I've been reading that her kid sister suddenly quit one school and entered another. I don't understand why this was such a big deal. Does anybody know?

Mako's younger sister is Kako. Kiko is their mum.

Strange because she will equally never be allowed to be a curator of a museum......

I suspect that the course will be highly useful when dealing with the old fossils in the Japanese imperial family.

If she has any sense she'll stay there, find a nice British bloke and live a normal life.

Theres no way shell get a British boyfriend while shes there.Shell almost certainly have a Japanese minder with her to make sure there`s no hanky panky.

University of Leicester? Blimey, talk about rubbish institution!

Well, she's going to need a master degree to be considered for a curator, interpreter, archival, collection... positions. That's really about it and many of the positions are volunteer basis on smaller museums. I used to date a girl doing this in MMA. Lousy pay, long hours. You have to do it for the love of the work. But she's a princess so more power to her.

University of Leicester has one of the best history and arts programs in the world. It is absolutely not a rubbish institution.

Kaerimashita and others about her choice of study. Any Japanese royal family member of 'royal' blood (so not the mums who are commoners and have already studied something, such as Masako) can only study subjects that have no political content and are total benign of 'taking sides' in anything, etc. etc. Her great grandfather (Hirohito) studied crabs, not sure about grandpa (Akihito), her uncle studied the canal systems of England, not sure about dad, but you can bet it would not start an international incident. It is Imperial Household policy - do not rock the boat in any way, but you can study them. Gawd what a waste of time royalty in any culture is, hey? She will have the best year of her life at our expense.

Maybe Prince Harry could give her a call. Tabloid circulation is on the slide.

Living in Leicester and staying in a student dorm?! This is going to be a bit of a rude awakening after closeted palace life! I wonder if they will send a "minder" to watch her? They didnt for the crown prince when he stayed in Australia so I somehow doubt theyll bother just for a princess.

Living in London, I doubt she'll meet any.

shes pursuing something she is interested in, that's what everyone should do. as for her "palace" she lives on imperial grounds, not in the palace, the Emperor and Empress live in the palace, the rest of the family lives in houses somewhere else, close together, or else that's what it said on the IHA website

Why? She lives in one. It will help her to properly keep house.
