Residents warned of macaques on the rampage in Miyazaki
Authorities in Hyuga, Miyazaki Prefecture, are warning residents to be on their guard after a number of Japanese macaques committed a series of attacks in a residential area.
According to city officials, the troop, led by an aggressive male around 50-60 cm in height, has been attacking residents in the area daily since Aug 28, TBS reported Saturday. A high school girl was bitten on the left leg while jogging in Hyuga on Wednesday. The next day three people reported being attacked by a monkey and on Friday another three locals were bitten.
Police also say that CCTV camera footage also showed that the animals had been entering and ransacking nearby temples. Experts say that Japanese macaques are not known to have attacked people in the area before and are speculating the incursions may be connected with this year’s water shortages.
