Rival mascots line up with Sentokun for first time in Nara
NARA —
Mascots Sentokun, Mantokun and Naamukun lined up together for the first time on Sunday, to promote an event held in Sakurai City. Sentokun is the official mascot for events to be held in 2010 to celebrate the 1,300th anniversary of the re-locating of the capital to Nara (capital from 710 to 784.) Mantokun and Naamukun were created to rival Sentokun, out of concerns Sentokun was not cute enough.
The characters danced on an outdoor stage and posed for the crowd, who called out to them and took photos.
A representative from an association that will manage events in 2010 expressed his pleasure with the mood of the day and said: “I hope things clear up and the three characters can promote the upcoming anniversary together.”
However, a spokesperson from the organization which designed Mantokun said that their character will remain a rival to Sentokun, and a spokesman for those who designed Naamukun said: “We still object to Sentokun’s antlers. This is not some kind of compromise. Naamukun and Sentokun are enemies.”

I think Sentokun makes Buddha look like a devil of some sort with those horns. What ever. I loved watching a recent sport competition between mascots from all across Japan on TV. The people wearing the costumes really earned their yen that day.
Of the three, I prefer Mantokun I guess.
