Mount Sakurajima in Kagoshima erupted on Thursday morning, spewing an ash plume up to 5,000 meters into the air, meteorological agency officials said. It was the 500th eruption this year of Sakurajima, Sankei reported.
The eruption of the 1,117-meter Sakurajima near Kagoshima city took place at 1:20 a.m. Two further eruptions occurred on Thursday afternoon.
Sakurajima is only 50 kilometers from Kyushu Electric Power Co's Sendai nuclear plant, where two reactors are likely to be the first to go back online sometime in the summer.
The meteorological agency has set the volcanic eruption warning at level three for Sakurajima.

50 km from Sendai nuclear plant looks like a good distance at first, but there is geological and historical evidence that a future major eruption could destroy the facility.

looks like a good distance? Not sure how they thought building it there would be a good idea in the first place. its like building a swing on the edge of a roof.
