The SDF was already prepared to destroy any missiles that threaten Japan, maybe Inada wants to reinterpret the definition of "threaten"?

This not-so-subtle reminder that the country is under minimal threat is regularly rehearsed. Why not just ramp up the threat and fear, and thus the clamour for "strong" government, by demanding the police be ready to deal with any NK agents and sleeper cells that might be ready to cause mayhem at a moment's notice.

'To destroy any missiles tha North Korea fires'

?

This sounds like a belligerent and bellicose statement that sounds very similar to North Korean rhetoric!

That's like me going around and pounding on my neighbor's doors and telling to be ready if ISIS attacks my apartment complex. It would be more about me and my self-importance than ISIS.

On alert AGAIN. Should the last one have been destroyed in the air when it was determined that it was going to land in Japanese waters? Where is the "red line" on the beach?

wow, there's a certain Elton John song running through my head now about a female dog being "back".

Last week Prime Minister Shinzo Abe picked Inada, a close confidante with staunchly nationalist views, as the new defense minister.

I'm pretty sure all the Generals must be having a laugh.

If you feel threatened by missiles launched from the DPRK and live in Japan, simply move next to a pachinko hall. Would the Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea bite the hand that feeds him? To enhance Japan's defense mobile pachinko halls should be considered.

For some reason, Dr Strangelove came into my head. But no.

More like the Supermarionation of Gerry Andersen's Thunderbird puppets.

I might be just me but KN are crazy, so unless it's going to hit the land Japan shouldn't destroy the missile, NK will spin it saying Japan shot down their missile "of glory" or something like that and send 100 more.

Can someone please tell Captain Crazy Pants to stop dropping missiles in the ocean near Japan?? It's scaring the fish and it's affecting the sashimi!!!

These are the same people who want to put the North Korean flag on the moon with 10 years.

WTF!!

Is not the firing of missiles into Japanese territory to be considered an act of war?

Next, she'll say Japan will be on alert to defend from a N.Korean invasion.

It would be cool if they intercepted a NK missile. Japan has every right to do so. Plus this would frustrate Pyongyang. Heck I hope Japan destroys at least a few missiles being shot at them. You don't just sit around and keep hoping they land in the ocean.

When was the JSDF not on alert? Was this announcement nothing more than an excuse to post a photo of Japan's Sarah Palin walking in front of a line of troops?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

This woman's going to fail spectacularly.

Seems like more than a few folks here are unfamiliar with Japan’s constitution – the JSDF have no authority to leave their Garrisons (bases) and perform any type of military mission without a specific order being given. In this case, as nKorea has recently increased launching of missiles, and the fact that this last one that landed in Japan’s territorial waters, the Def Mon issued the Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Order that permits JSDF to deploy to locations and be prepared to engage nK missiles if they threaten Japan.

I happen to think that’s a prudent decision – count how many missiles nK has fired over the past 90 days, - and how many of those actually failed – good guess is about 50%. Missiles don’t always fail early – they could also fail late so one aimed at the middle of the Japan Sea could easily have a guidance failure and land in Tohoku instead.

The crux of this issue is not Japan’s response to nK’s erratic and dangerous behavior – it’s nK’s actions and continual flaunting of UN resolutions on its missile program – and nuclear program, and human right violations, etc., etc…

I am not one that considers myself an "Abe fan" nor do I have any specific feelings towards Inada-san (with the exception of some of her past statements) However taken at face value there does not seem to be anything unreasonable related to what she is saying. Lincolnman above is probably on to something relevant to the Constitution.

NK missiles is the most clear and direct military threat to Japan. Defense minister of Japan gives the order to be ready to deal with that threat. What's the problem, why the fuss? Every country has the right to defend itself by any means and procedures it considers suitable.

Really? Just sounds like self defense to me. Whats the alternative? "To let any missile that North Korea fires hit Tokyo"?

Is that what you want?

ok lets ramp up the action japan should build a laser defense system and melt any missile deemed a danger to the Japanese territories From North Koreas Little Fat boy Playing Russian roulette as sooner or later he will make a mistake and one will land on mainland japan .

I don't think anyones suggesting Japan doesn't have the right to defend itself and simply "lay low" while nk plays "push the buttons".

It is perfectly capable and I'm not naive enough to believe Japan isn't at the ready. I hardly believe multiple meetings and discussions would be necessary in the case of imminent attack and an order wouldn't be given immediately.

This act by Inada is just a flexing of the muscles to let all and sundry know that the new girl is in town. And esp it's played up for the masses who will be easily impressed by how tough our new defense minister is. She's saving us!!!

The JSDF has been ordered to send troops to Sudan. Rather convenient that she has everyone looking at NK while she does that.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

The easiest way to know when NK will want to destroy Japan is when you see all the NK people living in Japan starting to leave , but then and again the little twerp might nuke his own people in Japan. Who knows?s
