Search conducted for missing tsunami victims in Miyagi, Iwate prefectures
Police and Maritime Safety Agency personnel on Monday conducted another search for missing tsunami victims in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures. Monday marked 23 months since the Tohoku region was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.
Searches for missing people are conducted in many hard-hit areas on the 11th day of each month at the request of families of the missing.
In Monday’s search, teams looked for remains in Kesennuma and Minami-sanriku in Miyagi Prefecture, and Rikuzentakata in Iwate Prefecture. TBS reported that no remains were found.
The National Police Agency says that 2,698 people remained unaccounted for in Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures as of Feb 6. The official death toll stands at 15,880.
