Awful news. There is a horrible chance now the toll will be over 100 - Im just hoping that the bodies can be recovered within the next few weeks or else they may have to wait until next Spring-Summer. Rest in Peace.

How dangerous it actually is, isn't it? One might expect to have enough time to get away when first signs appear that the volcano will erupt, but it seems not to be always the case.

Volcanic tremors have been detected constantly since Saturday’s eruption

I read that, but where are those readings? Not on sites like JMA, I think, as these would be small, specific tremors. As a suggestion, I think it would be helpful to the rescuers and the public in general to have access to those particular earthquake readings, as well as to a streaming webcam of the peak, viewable online if possible, but at least viewable at all the lower stations around the mountain. Is this possible?

Or maybe the earthquake readings are already available somewhere, and I just don't know how to find it. I know F-net has a lot of info, but I don't know where the readings for Mt. Ontake would be. http://www.fnet.bosai.go.jp/top.php?LANG=en

48 according to international news sources. But I might be proved right tomorrow. Or the next day, or the next. It's a sad day when so many people are killed doing what they love. They will be missed.

The 48 was revised to 47 because someone had included in the count a body bag that actually only contained a large rucksack.

I think they know how many have been reported missing, but they don't know how many are missing unreported.

They showed some of the rocks that came raining down and killed people on TV. Scary stuff! The power of nature.
