Six suicides with homemade gas reported over weekend

TOKYO —

At least six people killed themselves in Japan over the weekend in separate suicides that all used the same method of mixing cleaning liquid and bath salts, police said on Monday.

Japan, which has one of the developed world’s highest suicide rates, has seen a growing number of people killing themselves with the same method, which creates poisonous hydrogen sulfide gas. They are believed to have learned the method on the Internet.

I wonder how old these people were and the effect on their families.

As cruel as suicide is for the surviving family members and friends, at least this method doesn't endanger passersby, like jumping off a building does. Nor does it cause the disruption and trauma of a dive in front of the train. If these people can somehow figure out how to arrange to be found by prepared professionals... perhaps post a letter to the coroner or a funeral home, just before adding mixing the ingredients?

Taj, spot on mate. I remember last year a couple of people got crushed and killed by jumpers from tall buildings. How bad is that for the families and friends? I work in Akasaka and am often checking the skies.

Let's take a deep breath and hope that these kind of incidents don't appear more often.
