So does it go to Yasukuni Shrine?

Nope, it stays in America I hope. Soon this will be a big story. Who gets to keep the skull. We need to run tests to see if it's Japanese.

If we are lucky we'll see a custody battle of epic porportions. Japan even wants custody of the dead.

NetNinja: If it's determined to be Japanese, are you saying it won't be returned to Japan? That would never happen.

I never say never these days Paul.

We'll see. It's been a long time. A museum may want to keep the skull as an exhibit. Japan may not like that but that kind of situation could arise. There's always somebody that brings about such situations.

Re: paulinusa "So does it go to Yasukuni Shrine?" The easy answer is "No".

There are no human remains at Yasukuni. Just a memorial with lists of names.

Why would that be lucky? I think it would highlight the stupidity of mankind if anyone tried to prevent any wardead from being returned home for selfish reasons.

Timing... There's also the not insignificant matter of the 70th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack at the end of this year.

If there is argument over the skull - why not follow Solomon's law? Let them have half each. Everyone is happy.

Find the man's family and make sure they get the skull. Don't even involve any governments.

Display it in a bullet proof glass case at the entrance to the Arizona Memorial. There would be nothing cruel about it. The Hiroshima Bakudan Museum shows the world what the A-Bomb did to them, so show the skull and other pictures.

If there is any way to identify the relatives of this Japanese pilot, the skull deserves to be returned to his family. Period. The dead deserve to be treated with respect. To use the skull for any purpose other than closure for the family does not deserve to be commented upon.

its should stay in america, as if it goes back to japan it would just be hidden. Here you rarely hear anything about what Japan did in the war. I mean i find it interesting that Most of the US presidents have visited the Hiroshima site yet You dont hear much about Japanese officials visiting the Pearl Harbor site. Japan continues to claim to be victims of the war when the U.S. was the actual victim and Japan at that time was too arrogant.

The fact is that no U.S. president has ever visited Hiroshima.

All readers back on topic please. Hiroshima is not relevant to this discussion.

Anyone who would want this skull displayed in a glass case at a museum in Honolulu would not have a single reason to object should the Vietnamese wish to dig up the remains of an American pilot and mount them in a glass case in Hanoi.

My feeling is that the remains of ALL service members, regardless of nationality, should be returned to their families. It is the only decent, honorable thing to do.

Or have decency and honor vanished from this world?
