Anyone know what happens when you get a speeding ticket on an international drivers license in Japan? I know that you still have to pay the proscribed fine but what happens to the points that normally get deducted from a Japanese license? Can the JP pass them along to your foreign drivers license? Just curious...

What I don't understand is why they are looking at changing the speed limits to kph.... My experience is that the signs on the side of the road are in mph as that is about the speed everyone drives at.
So far no problems with speeding tickets but have been breath tested and seen a few other RBT checkpoints set up. Particularly at this time of year (hanami).

No! If you are only temporary in Jp you don't have to pay the fine either, just don't come back.

nisegaijin -
You really need to get to your local auto parts store. Police and emergency vehicles in Japan send a sat signal that most med-high range radar detectors can pick up on. Mine gives me a heads up if there's a police vehicle or any emergency vehicle in the vicinity - and also lets me eavesdrop on radio communications if they're near by and talking. Mine's pegged the unmarked cars in Sapporo every time.

Okinawamike: You forgot the big old Toyota Crown undercover cops. They'll get you every time.
Having lived in Europe for over 10 years (Germany), I was in drivers bliss. But more important than going fast was being able to predict what another driver would do 99.9% of the time.
My point: Over there, they know how to drive, and follow the road rules: Keep right except to pass, obey posted limits, use signals when changing lanes or making a turn. That predictability makes going fast easy. Not too much is unexpected.

"Then while your blasting away at 80 with the crowd, you come up on some dip doing 60!"
.. its a speed limit not the speed you have to drive ;-/

About the Trucks; Speed Limiters can be used so that a truck cannot go over a certain speed... it was implemented in Australia ( not sure if in all states ).

my car goes 30 without even touching the accelerator. Taxi's are going to be forced to slow down? Seems like when the sun goes down, the police go home. No one checks speed limits after sun set except the cameras that randomly work on the roads. I wouldn't mind driving the speed limit, if everyone else did. But right now, if you drive the speed limit you are endangering your life and the life of others. Traffic speed is much faster than anything posted.

Up here in the sticks of Ibaraki, I have YET to see ANYONE go the speed limit. The signs have absolutely no meaning whatsoever.

hokkaidoguy,
oh man, i am like a regular at super autobacs and i did dump 30k on a GPS cop detector, which does things as you describe. However it seems that either undie cops and bikes give different signal or don't give one at all. it gives me ca-roke warning when it seems an ordinary cop car, but not undercover. gives chatter info as well.

Mine pegs the undercovers quite well, too. I've yet to be caught or surprised by one I didn't know about.

pawatan at 01:22 PM JST - 3rd April
It's one of the Yupiterus, but I can't remember the model right now.

The cops do nothing to mitigate speeding anyway so what`s the point?
