That was a little one. You all are welcome to earthquake country. You guys are living in the middle of mine field called quake. Hang on!

were going to Tokyo Disney sea tomorrow, and its located in Chiba prefecture. Do you think its still safe to go there after this strong earthquake?

there were no tsunamis and if there were they would move a bit faster than 1km/h
gogogo at 12:25 AM JST - 10th August
sn00z3: there was no damage to anything what-so-ever, you dont have to worry.

I was outside in my yard with my dog & cats answering mother nature when it hit, was weird, it sounded like rain but there were stars in the sky,the quake shook water off the trees, then when I heard the house across the way making noises I figured it out & cud feel it, pointed my flashlight on my pond & there was my resident frog riding the surf LOL he was kinda spread eagled.
By the time I got to my door it was over & the dog & cats were right behind me, opened the door & the mrs was going on about what I just missed.
From all the posts it sounds like one shaker to remember!

Sarge: you should not be happy about living on a ground floor, either. Ok, you feel less ground motion, but the risks of structural collapsing are much higher compared with a 17th floor. Anyway, it was one of the strongest eartquakes in the latest times, indeed.

tell you what guys... this is all nothing... i was stuck in traffic jam on elevated highway around hakozaki area and THAT was scary! felt like being on a boat... except you are up in the air surrounded by hundreds of 2 ton cars..

Well, being a Tokyo dweller I am relieved to have had a strongish quake. I start to get nervous when there hasn't been any quakes for a while. Last night's was a good size to relieve a bit of tectonic tension. We 'should' be able to sleep easy for a while now, hopefully.
illsayit at 08:17 AM JST - 10th August
the depth is significant. There was another recently at that depth. They normally, your regular easing-the-tension ones, vary (in this vicinty) about from memory 40-100km depth, give or take. We were at a bon-odori outside, quite eerie.

I laugh at that puny earthquake! Mwahaha. Is that the best you can do, mother nature?? The Niigata earthquake was much worse. The pot-plants came jumping towards me and fell into my bath. That was gross. Why do my in-laws keep pot-plants in the bathroom anyway?
elbudamexicano at 09:58 PM JST - 10th August
Hey abromofo, you can laugh now, talk about Niigata but if we ever get the big 1 here in Tokyo, many thousands will die, and I hope you do not think it is still laughing.

6.9 at the epicenter, 4-5 in the Tokyo-Yokohama area. Were it the full 6.9 you'd know it! Kobe was 7.2, for reference.
TheGeneral at 07:23 AM JST - 11th August
USGS maintains that this quake was a magnitude 7.1 http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2009kcaz.php
I wonder where the disparity comes from.
There is a considerable difference (2X?) between a 6.9 and a 7.1.

Good morning anyone felt the small one this morning? Felt like a one maybe 2.
