A 16-year-old student at Adachi Higashi high school in Tokyo remained in a coma Monday after being hit on the head by a 6-kg hammer at school on Saturday. According to police investigations, the hammer was thrown by a 17-year-old student practicing for a track and field meet. The hammer flew 40 meters and hit the 16-year-old when he was picking up his own hammer.

A teacher who coaches the students told police he had always them to shout out a warning to each other before they throw the hammer.

Sad. Several people around the world have died from this type of hammer throw accident. Doesn't look good but unfortunately those are the risks of this sport.

Isn't it common practice to clear all fire arms and wait till the round has finished before you check your targets at a rifle range? I guess someone forgot to point out the dangers of dodging 6kg steel balls flying through the air at terminal velocity..... truly 'terminal'!!! This has to be a clear case of negligence by the instructor. Sad!

The coach should have yelled out "Stop! Hammer Time!" to the student who was running on the field to retrieve his throw.

Or....."Here Comes The Hammer!" by the student who was throwing it.

I once saw a guy take a javelin through the left shoulder at a school sports event. Same thing, no one noticed him until they tracked the spear into his body. He lived though I am not sure what happened to him after that. Could never decide if he was lucky or unlucky.

The teacher passes the buck by saying the students were supposed to shout a warning when throwing. If you are concentrating on a good throw, you are going to forget to shout the warning sometimes. Plus, what guarantees that the shout can always be heard ? The games teacher is supposed to be a qualified coach and you cannot rely on students doing a good job on warnings.

In a Track & Field session the throwing area should be supervised by the coach at all times, which means keeping the landing area clear and the coach shouting warnings if needed.

This is the responsibility of the teacher and the school. End of story.

Are you kidding?! I'm pretty sure that shouting "here comes a hammer" will help you! What if your too late... you didin't hear it.... you ducked but it hit you anyways? (sigh) Hammers just shouldn't be thrown i'm pretty sure there's something else "less dangerous" you guys could use in whatever sport that is! JEEZ!!
