It's only a drop in the ocean in today's money, but why not donate the money to victims and survivors of the Rape of Nanking (like that's ever going to happen)?

Or give it to the families of the 100,000 or so who died building the Thailand/Burma railroad? Or to the families of the tens of thousands of POWs who died of starvation and deprivation at Japanese hands? But, according to Tamogami, those actions were justified, so...

or give it to those who suffered from the holocaust of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Essentially being gifted the money by a friend while holding a public position by a private entity trying to influence public and government opinion is why he should morally decline the money.

This smells like the same scenario as the sumo wrestler doing a back flip on his match fixing claims. Somebody is putting some pressure on this guy for sure!

Awww, isn't he a nice, well-informed guy... he should learn a few truthes then give the money to holocaust victims for the suffering that his kind of thinking causes.

Can he just give back 700 mil and take this 3 mil instead? nah, only joking. He should take both though ,money is always handy in "retirement".

I am pleased that this man has made his views known. He clearly felt he had something to say. I worry when we censure people, no matter how uncomfortable we may feel about what they say. Japan had reasons for entering WW2, but because of the shock that the USA felt following Pearl Harbour, and the revulsion caused by Japanese military human rights abuses, we rarely stop to look at the issues that led Japan and America into their horrific conflict. If we just say 'they were bad' 'we were good' then we risk making fools of ourselves too. karada ni ki wo tsukete

I think he is horrible and so are the judges who picked him as the winner.
They are nasty, yuck, and a disgrace to Japan and decent Japanese people.
I'd like to push them all in my pool in mid winter to punish them, oooh the sauce of it all!!!

The validity of the essay would have been undermined by the author friendship with its organizer, if the author accepts the prize money. It would severely hurt the essay's premise of justifying Japan wartime aggression on thinner ice. Meantime, the Japan government is adopting a avoidance strategy to let time wash away the World War II atrocities while the victims of war slowly died eventually. To the empire of the rising sun, "You can have it all, my empire of dirt" Hurt, NIN. Setting sun.
