TEPCO begins removing spent fuel at Fukushima Daini plant

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), the operator of the stricken Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant, has begun removing the fuel assemblies from the Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant's fourth reactor.

According to TEPCO, all four reactors at Fukushima Daini, which is located around 11 kilometers from Fukushima Daiichi, automatically shut down after the March 11 disaster. TEPCO has been working on "repairing" the reactor, which it says involves removing spent fuel assemblies, each containing bundles of fuel rods, by crane and placing them into a pool of water, TBS reported Wednesday.

TEPCO says the work on reactor 4 has been proceeding faster than the other reactors and that it plans to remove all 764 assemblies by Oct 24. Media were invited to the plant on Tuesday to observe the process.

Ah, so this means that they are planning to fire up reactor 4 at Fukushima No 2 Plant.

Although other news sources say that the No 4 reactor building is filled with water to contain the strong radiation.

The crane is said to be pulling fuel rods out of there and dropping them into the spent fuel rod pool for ease of maintenance...

... so maybe, hopefully, they are not planning to restart No 4 reactor.

This is interesting news for me as there has been a virtual blanket on news about Daini.

Would it be true to say that the four reactors at Daini were shut down by the earthquake, and cooling with fresh water was intiated, continuing up till today?

I don't understand... originally.. before the first nuclear reactor was set up... had they figured out what they were going to do with the spent fuel or nuclear waste? I was always told.. think it through first before doing something... seriously.. my mind is boggled.. adults man...

Zichi,

so it[TEPCO] must have strong belief that one day they'll be able to restart the plant which would need the permission of the governor who has stated many times there'll be no more running reactors in the prefecture..

Well that is the current governor, the election of a new one can be bought. Keindaren will probably help out, and their members push their employees to vote as they are told (or else...).

Zichi,

You are right, the candidate probably wouldn't be 'pro-nuclear' until after the election though. It would be more like, 'It is most unfortunate, that we are being forced to accept bla blaha bla blaha."

Also large companies are leaning really strongly on their employes to vote as they are told. This is no joke. At least some major (I don't know how common it is) employers are telling people who they should vote for in local elections, in ways that make it very difficult for average Japanese people to refuse.
