TEPCO creates simpler guide for compensation claims
TOKYO —
Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) has responded to a government request to make the compensation claims process easier for those affected by the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
In September, TEPCO started sending out forms to Fukushima residents to file claims for damages resulting from the evacuation of areas surrounding its stricken Daiichi nuclear power plant. TEPCO said it aimed to make its first payments in October, but was subsequently heavily criticized for creating an overly large claim form that complicated the application process. The manual was 156 pages and the claims forms themselves were 60 pages.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry ordered TEPCO to simplify the procedures and make the claim process simpler. In response, TEPCO said that from this week, it will start sending a four-page guide to claimants.
According to the government, about 80,000 people were evacuated from a 20-km radius around the nuclear plant, which has been leaking radiation since March 11.

Seems TEPCO did not agree to simplify the forms of their own accord but had to be ordsered to do so by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, , hopefully they will be ordered to speedup payments as well

In many countries people would not be filling in compensation claims: lawyers would do it for them and they would have started six months ago.
In the meantime I remember recently reading that TEPCO was thinking of selling resorts. I was wondering if any of these were being used to rehouse people.

Hm, but just because they are only 4 pages long doesn't mean they aren't complicated or difficult. The simple tax forms are generally 4 pages long and for the average person, they aren't simple or easy to figure out. The help manual is usually around 30 pages or more.

Oh, I misread the article! I thought it said that the form was now 4 pages, but CrazyJoe is right. It just says that the company made a 4 page guide. How is that any easier for the claimants?

It has probably become more difficult now that there is only a 4 page explanation for the same 60 page application form (thanks Crazy Joe). Imagine the traumatised, ageing agricultural population being faced with 60 page compensation claim application forms, now with a four page guide. It sounds like an effective way of avoiding paying compensation.

I'm surprised tepco doesn't charge claimants to fill out the forms, something like : 1M yen application fee , nonrefundable

I think the point of the voluminous claim form was to deter any potential claimant from making a claim in the first place.
