So TEPCO ... after all the setsuden the companies implemented onto their employees, and the teiden rotations during the summer in some areas, the companies will have to pay extra for the energy consumption so you can pay the victims?

Wow. I wonder how many more hurdles corporations have to jump over before this nightmare is over?

By the way ... those gaudy and flashy pachinko parlors are classified under corporate businesses right?

A FARCE, raise corporate prices then most everything else goes up to cover this cost. NUKE TEPCO !

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Unreal.

And this is the kind of big company that an advanced, innovative country of Japan produces...

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

The Japanese utility behind the nuclear plant hobbled by the March tsunami...

Whoa. Let's stop RIGHT there. Hobbled? Laughable. By the March tsunami? Farcical fallacy. TEPCO's arrogance and dismissal of data, again and again, telling them that mega-tsunami happen, was the whole reason a nuclear power plant with six reactors --2 of which suffered melt-through, one of which suffered meltdown and one which has a storage pool right on the edge-- caused an unprecedented catastrophe. Tell the truth. Don't be sneered at.

Unashamed for the results of their stupidity, Unashamed greed, and a PR campaign that paints TEPCO as a victim

This has gone beyond embarrassing.

GOOD RIDDANCE TO BAD RUBBISH!

@valley-of-the-shadows. Cross your fingers. Japan might still continue to bail out or prop up TEPCO.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

actually not bad idea..maybe it will force em to stop the damn coolers in the winter

from Tepco to corporate => consumers...burden burden...stiff shoulders.. game over, merry christmas 2012 as well.

This is the right move, although only half. Not only corporate users, but everybody should pay higher prices. The ultimate cause of the Fukushima disaster has been supposedly cheap nuclear energy. After decades of discussions, it should have been clear to everybody that nuclear energy can only be cheap when you cut corners. Now those who have supported it politically, haven't cared to control it and enjoyed the low cost should also shoulder the damages they caused. It's easy to blame TEPCO when our own personal greed is just as much responsible.

It isn't generally known that the way electricity rates are set is by adding together overheads (personnel bills, general office admin, fuel, etc), and the value of assets (power plants, etc). Thus the more nuclear power plants TEPCO builds, the higher the 'cost' of electricity. Nuclear power is not cheap for the general consumer; it merely makes big profits for the companies.

“We are extremely sorry for our customers but we ask for understanding,”

I'll give them understanding -- written on my boot before I kick them where the sun doesn't shine. What's happening in Fukushima is 100% the company's fault, be it using antiquated equipment in EXTREMELY poorly mapped out areas, mismanagement, ignoring the myriad of times people warned them about something like this happening, to continuing to pay out big severances packages to management that quit because of 'stress'. I want the government to completely nationalize TEPCO (not just the demolished Fukushima plant, like they were talking about) and to say to TEPCO, "We ask for understanding".

I fear though, sadly, that the government will probably reach more backroom deals with the company and 'nationalize' a small part of the company while bailing them out for much, much more and using the taxpayer's money (more than they have already, that is). Then it will be back to the usual mismanagement. The only GOOD thing about what's being mentioned in this thread is that money talks, and if corporations threaten some kind of repercussions the government will back out of agreeing to have fees raised (for corporations, at least... they'll intead allow for a SLIGHT increase across the general board).

1 ( +3 / -2 )

Please correct me if I am wrong but didn't it come out after March 11th that TEPCO had been overcharging consumers for quite a while? If so...wow! Take about wanting your cake and to eat it!

Samantha, etc.

You a corporate user, i.e owner of a company? If not it won't affect you nor me.

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

You can be quite sure that pretty much anything that significantly raises corporate costs will be passed on in the form of higher prices to consumers.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

What's happening in Fukushima is 100% the company's fault, be it using antiquated equipment . . . etc.

I'd say lack of oversight and regulation.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Simple solution: Nationalize!!! No more price hikes, higher accountability. Win win.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Since Tepco keeps repeating the same fallacy over and over again, I don't feel too bad about doing some repeating myself:

Onagawa nuclear plant was also hit by the same earthquake and same tsunami. It was not damaged, because unlike Tepco, THEY FOLLOWED BASIC SAFETY STANDARDS!!!

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This is bad for my company. Grrr.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

presto345: "I'd say lack of oversight and regulation."

Sure! Add that to my list, as well as a dozen other faults one could add, no doubt. You can also class this under mismanagement, though. Maybe I should have just added the general 'negligence', of which they still suffer greatly (or sorry... WE suffer greatly).

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

gaijinTechie, there are hints that Onagawa had some earthquake related damage as well. Obviously they managed to keep the plant under control. Given the lack of information to the public, you should not prematurely jump to conclusions about safety standards there. And btw, Onagawa is operated by TEPCO as well.

@smithinjapan

"I want the government to completely nationalize TEPCO."

do you have any idea how foolish that is? TEPCO is one of the largest and most widely held companies in Japan. you obviously have no idea how economics work because nationalizing them would wipe out the value of their stocks. the gov't is trying feverishly to NOT let this happen.

come on bud, be rational before you post.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

@ It's Me! No, I don't but I am still dreaming!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

We need more competition! TEPCO now here in Tokyo is a virtual monopoly! Since we can not say, well TEPCO wants to raise my electricity rates I will change to...???Solar?? Time to get some real competition here in Japan! Then by next year we could talk about a real MERRY Christmas!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

rickyvee: "TEPCO is one of the largest and most widely held companies in Japan."

And one of the largest and widely held disasters, clearly... which the government keeps 'holding on to'. And so long as the companies are allowed to keep on cutting corners and messing up, that will continue. So the question is, do we want responsible companies and government, or value of government stock? Sadly, money will always take precedent.

"come on bud, be rational before you post."

Don't take my comments from previous posts and try to twist them when they cannot be twisted, please.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

TEPCO has to raise their rates to cover the payments for this disaster. TEPCO also needs to look at how they are spending their revenue and CUT waste. Because this disaster is No joke 240 ton of radioactive waste in the tunnels underneath a reactor is guessed to have gotten into the ground water. This has to be cleaned and the leak repaired. Compensation to victims the list goes on and on. So I would not be surprised if they raised rates every year for the next 40 or so years. just to cover the costs of the cleanup.

This will really hurt the companies that utilize high power consumption to make their products.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Onagawa nuclear plant, run by Tohoku Electric Company, suffered minor damage (who wouldn't?) and declared the lowest state of emergency because of spilled water from storage pool. It was taken into control in a couple of says, and Onagawa plant served as refugee center for 200 people. One aftershock severed two power lines to cooling systems, but since Tohoku Electric was thinking more than just "muh-nee!"', they had a third one also.

There really isn't anybody but Tepco to blame for Fukushima Dai-ichi. Overcharging for decades and not using any for security?!? They deserve absolutely no understanding whatsoever!

Smart guys, better than for households, as we can switch off the AC and the light and everything and can save money, not the factories and corporate users. Or are we the next?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

oh BTW (clicked the submit button to early) the companies will rise the product and service prices as a result and will be passing the bill to the consumers. And then we are the next.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

tepco should be made to sell off everything it owns before pulling these stunts

0 ( +0 / -0 )

My oh my TEPCO... you will be creating more prices hike with your idea of increasing electricity for corporate users. Geezzzzzz... You have been raking billions if not trillions since your operation. This is getting too much. Why pass the cost of compensations you gonna pay the victims to others. Get it all from all your stocks and stockholders. What ever they have earned and properties acquired from being share holders of TEPCO. It's payback time.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

If they raise the rates for businesses, we the little people will pay as they pass on the costs. This along with a consumption tax increase which includes food, medicine and other necessary and not frill purchases will drag the economy even deeper in the sewer it is in now.

Thank you.
